The purpose of this study was to explore how Peck’s (1987) stages of Community-Making could be identified and predicted for a collegiate basketball team over the course of consecutive seasons by exploring Cohesion, Flow, and athletic performance. The study utilized a repeated measures longitudinal survey design with the members of a Division I collegiate level female basketball team (N = 13) during the athletic seasons of 1999/2000 and 2000/2001. Participants completed both the Group Environment Questionnaire (Carron, Brawley, & Widmeyer, 2002) and the Flow State Scale -2 (Jackson & Eklund, 2003) pre and post competition at several times over the …

The goal of academic resilience research is to identify factors and processes which lead to academic success among groups of students generally found to be at-risk, including those of African American and Latina/o descent. The present study investigated a possible risk factor (perceptions of discrimination), a possible protective factor (emotional intelligence), and the role of gender in predicting academic achievement (as measured by high school GPA) in a sample (N = 79) of African American and Latina/o high school students attending one high school in Minnesota. The prevalence of mental health issues and suicidal thoughts and actions among school-aged children and adolescents is a serious issue. This article examines the scope of the problem nationwide and provides a brief overview of the literature regarding the effectiveness of school-wide screening programs for depression and suicide risk. The authors describe a suicide prevention program that has been implemented by the first author (a high school counselor in Minnesota) that combines classroom guidance, screening, and referrals for outside mental health services. This article includes recommendations for school counselors interested in implementing a school-wide screening and prevention program.

Boston Public Schools (BPS) and the University preparation programs have developed a collaborative partnership that shares a vision for charting bright futures for all students. Through partnership with two BPS high schools, school counseling graduate students engage in service learning and participate in organized experiences that meet school needs and are coordinated with graduate students' learning goals. School counseling students meet with BPS students individually and through classroom interventions to assist in the college/career process and prepare them for post-secondary educational options. This session will describe the partnership, including direct experiences shared by graduate students.

Results from an in-depth quantitative analysis provide insight into redefining and assessing multicultural competencies specific to school counselors.
