Master-Planning The American Campus: Goals, Actions, And Design Strategies, Amir Hajrasouliha Jun 2017

Master-Planning The American Campus: Goals, Actions, And Design Strategies, Amir Hajrasouliha

Amir Hajrasouliha

This research identified common goals, actions, and design strategies of university campus master plans in the USA, by analyzing 50 randomly selected master plans. Four design strategies were distilled, based on the top goals and actions: transition from (1) a deficient campus to a complete campus, (2) an isolated campus to a contextual campus, (3) a fragmented campus to a cohesive campus, and (4) a brown campus to an ecological campus. In addition, seven campus form dimensions were distilled: (1) land use organization (arrangement of space and facilities), (2) compactness, (3) connectivity, (4) spatial configuration, (6) campus living, (7) greenness, …

International Students In Independent Schools: The Divide Between Attitude To Mathematics Class And Perception Of Classroom Environment, Peter W. Kilgour, Tony Rickards Nov 2016

International Students In Independent Schools: The Divide Between Attitude To Mathematics Class And Perception Of Classroom Environment, Peter W. Kilgour, Tony Rickards

Peter Kilgour

The experience of students with a non-English speaking background (NESB) studying in Australian independent school classrooms is an ongoing concern for administrators of these schools. This paper reports on research by Kilgour and Rickards (2009) into the perceptions these students have of the learning environments of their Mathematics classrooms along with the same students’ attitudes to Mathematics as a subject. Data collected by survey and interview revealed that NESB students have a more positive attitude to Mathematics as a subject than their Australian classmates, but their perception of their learning environment is more negative than their Australian classmates.

Culturally Responsive Practices As Whole School Reform, V. Mayfield, Dorothy Garrison-Wade Sep 2015

Culturally Responsive Practices As Whole School Reform, V. Mayfield, Dorothy Garrison-Wade

Dorothy Garrison-Wade

Despite our best efforts, black children still lag behind white children in academic performance on standardized academic measures. Unconscious racism and our lack of ability to confront it present the most salient reason for the indefatigable prevalence of inequitable opportunities for children of color which undeniably result in achievement gaps. This study identified specific culturally responsive practices schoolwide in a middle school that is successfully closing academic opportunity gaps between White and Black students. The findings indicate professional development served as a conduit for ongoing discussions on race and building the cultural competency of staff. These discussions served to promote …

Postgraduate Research Experience 2009 : The Report Of The Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire, Ali Radloff, Daniel Edwards, Hamish Coates, B Guthrie, C Tilbrook

Dr Daniel Edwards

Each year, graduates of Australian higher education institutions who have completed a doctoral or research masters degree are invited by their institution and Graduate Careers Australia (GCA) to respond to the Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire (PREQ) about four months after graduation. This report presents the results from the ninth PREQ survey conducted since 1999. The PREQ asks graduates to respond to 28 statements about seven aspects of their research degree. The first 27 statements measure the quality of supervision, the intellectual climate of the department in which the respondent studied, the development of generic skills, the quality of the infrastructure …

Re-Imagining Specialized Stem Academies: Igniting And Nurturing ‘Decidedly Different Minds,’ By Design, Stephanie Pace Marshall

Stephanie Pace Marshall, Ph.D.

This article offers a personal vision and conceptual design for reimagining specialized science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) academies designed to nurture decidedly different STEM minds and ignite a new generation of global STEM talent, innovation, and entrepreneurial leadership. This design enables students to engage actively in the authentic work, modes of inquiry, and practices that distinguish four STEM learning cultures, environments, and communities: (a) Inquiry and Research Laboratory and Interdisciplinary Learning Center—develops disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and inquiry-based thinking; (b) Innovation Incubator and Design Studio—ignites innovative and design-based thinking; (c) Global Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Institute—nurtures change leadership and systems-based thinking; …

Schooling Issues Digest : School Effectiveness, John Cresswell Dec 2003

Schooling Issues Digest : School Effectiveness, John Cresswell

Dr John Cresswell

There have been many developments in school effectiveness research since the 1960s when it was said that schools contributed little to the difference between students' outcomes. A number of processes associated with effective schools have been identified and these factors have been incorporated into school improvement programs. Continued detailed longitudinal research should allow for further evaluation of these factors which will lead to better learning outcomes for students.
