This paper refers to the work of S J Prais who questioned the outcomes of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's PISA survey of the reading, mathematics and science attainments of fifteen year-olds. Prais suggested that methodological flaws in Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) had resulted in an apparent improvement in the attainment of British students, particularly when compared to their Swiss and German counterparts. This paper responds to Prais's criticisms, noting that when Prais's conjectures are tested with empirical data they are not supported. Insights Into Meeting Standards From Listening To The Voices Of Urban Students, Mark Storz, Karen Nestor

Part of a special section on the use of standards in middle schools. Students' perspectives on learning were considered when a newly configured K–8 school in a large urban district implemented standards-based reform. Interviews with middle school students in the district indicated that they wanted school experiences that were challenging, integrative, and exploratory and that they were eager to partner with their teachers to achieve high standards of performance that allowed them to develop fully as individuals.
