Last summer as instructors at a creative-writing conference, we had an experience that made us better writers. While critiquing a promising piece of fiction, we became frustrated because we couldn't put our finger on why the story didn't quite work. The tale, which centered around a young soldier's baptismal firefight in Vietnam, at first seemed solid. The main character was believable, the setting was described in gritty realism, and the plot had a beginning, middle, and end. But although the story was technically correct, it didn't really capture our interest. We found we couldn't get involved with the writer's grunt …

Looking For Evidence In The Teaching Of Mathematics, Ray Peck, A Bishop, S Bennett Nov 2000

Looking For Evidence In The Teaching Of Mathematics, Ray Peck, A Bishop, S Bennett

Ray Peck

The joint Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers AAMT/Monash University project 'Excellence in the teaching of mathematics: professional standards project' has been working with teacher focus groups in four states to try and build a picture of what mathematics teachers believe represents excellent teaching. This paper discusses the second aim of this project: to develop an assessment scheme and protocols for certifying this excellence. Topics discussed are developing ways to assess excellence, looking at an American model of assessment - the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and other models for standards of excellence in teaching.

This paper discusses group learning among VCE mathematics students at a combined schools' workshop in Hamilton, Victoria, and at Gippsland Grammar. When tasks with the potential for collaborative groups to discover complexities are used in conjunction with a teaching approach like class collaboration students tend to engage with the tasks, more frequently display the types of characteristics possessed by talented mathematicians, and develop new mathematical understandings. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the tks described in this paper are suitable for such a purpose.

Helping Adults Persist: Four Supports, John Comings, Andrea Parrella, Lisa Soricone

John P. Comings

The National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL) is conducting a study on learner persistence. The first phase of NCSALL's study used research as a tool to develop advice for practitioners on how to help adults persist in their studies. In addition, the study developed advice for policymakers on how to structure funding and accountability systems in ways that will support persistence. The next phase of the study will test and refine this advice in programs. In the first phase of this research, the study team read previous studies and related literature, and talked with practitioners …

The Implications Of Halo Effects And Item Dependencies For Objective Measurement, T Mcnamara, Ray Adams Dec 1999

The Implications Of Halo Effects And Item Dependencies For Objective Measurement, T Mcnamara, Ray Adams

Prof Ray Adams

Analysis of data from performance-based language tests presents the problem of dealing appropriately with bundles of items that are linked to particular tasks. The authors use recent developments in Rasch modelling which allow analysis of bundles of items (or sets of ratings) to examine the extent of dependence between items and ratings, and they explore the implications of those dependences on the assessments. Data from two performance assessments are used in two studies of this problem.

Keynotes [Sound Recording] : Music Evaluation Kit, Jennifer Bryce, Margaret Wu

Dr Jennifer Bryce

'Keynotes' is a multi-faceted, multimedia program for teachers and students of music. A range of computer-scored assessment tasks lets teachers pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in a student's musical ability, while the orientation section profiles over 20 instruments to help students make an informed decision about which instrument to learn.

King Of The Bingo Game, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Charlie Sweet

Critics have long recognized symbolism as one of Ralph Ellison's favorite devices. However, a lesser-known technique, juxtaposition, illuminates the racism theme so prominent in his classic short story "King of the Bingo Game." By contrasting the main character's major fantasy with his real-life situation, Ellison makes more poignant the gap between white and black America in the 1930s.

What Is Numeracy? What Is Mathematics?, Dave Tout

David (Dave) Tout

The questions of what is numeracy and what is its relationship with mathematics are questions that adult educators in Australia have been trying to answer over the last ten or more years. This discussion and presentation will look at some of the developments, issues and debates that have arisen over this period, and present a number of positions and theories about numeracy, and the implications of numeracy teaching.

Numeracy In The Adult Literacy And Life Skills Project., M Manly, Dave Tout

David (Dave) Tout

This paper reports on the development to date of the numeracy conceptual framework for the Adult Literacy and Life Skills (ALL) Project. The inclusion of a numeracy scale in the ALL survey offered a significant opportunity to develop a new conceptual framework for adult numeracy. This paper discusses the meaning of numeracy and the notion of numerate behaviour, represents a framework of five facets, looks at a complexity-rating scheme used to guide construction of the assessment tasks, and finally presents some preliminary findings about adults' ability to solve different percentage tasks.
