Most current professionals who serve in an enrollment management leadership capacity likely were trained “on the job,” or at professional development events, primarily because credit‐bearing credentials, degrees, and other formal programs were non‐existent (Phair, 2014). However, that landscape has since changed and now there are multiple ways for enrollment management professionals to receive a formal education to enhance one’s enrollment management skill set. Graduate Coursework In College Counseling: An Exploratory Study Of The Certificate Programs Training Pathway In The United States, Christopher W. Tremblay, Ed.D

This research is a qualitative case study of graduate certificate programs offered in college counseling in the United States. This study presents historical and current information about eight different college counseling certificate programs and seven themes that describe these programs in the context of national college access and college readiness goals. Eight programs were identified at four schools in California, one school in Michigan, one school in Minnesota, and one school in Massachusetts. This article discusses the roles of college admissions professionals and high school counselors in preparing students to apply to, select, and enroll at a college or university. Framed in the historical context of access to higher education, perceived and real barriers that hinder students from considering and enrolling in college, and strategies proven to alleviate access issues, this article describes opportunities to enhance the college-going process for youth in the United States.

College access marketing (CAM) is a relatively new phenomenon that seeks to positively influence the college-going rate. This report defines CAM, describes CAM examples, and discusses how CAM seeks to counter barriers to college. it explores four main elements of CAM: information, marketing, advocacy, and social mobilization. Further, it identifies themes among the CAM literature that illustrate its value. It explains CAM’s role in supporting access to higher education, discusses the shortcomings of the literature, and identifies areas for further research. As CAM evolves, so will its effectiveness in promoting higher education and facilitating college enrollment.

Research on the concept of meritocracy and its role in college admissions is the major focus of this article. It explores the factors that contribute to the gatekeeping process and provides a historical context that led to the evolution of today's admission protocol. It focuses specifically on the strict meritocratic practices of many colleges as they continue to preserve the longstanding and deeply rooted admission traditions. The authors provide a discussion about options for reforming the system, along with recommendations and topics that require additional research and exploration.
