Integrated Mathematica™-Based Physical Chemistry Curriculum: Bringing The Science To The Forefront, Kevin Ausman Sep 2013

Integrated Mathematica™-Based Physical Chemistry Curriculum: Bringing The Science To The Forefront, Kevin Ausman

Kevin D. Ausman

Undergraduate- and graduate-level physical chemistry classes are often so mathematically intensive that they often (a) dissuade qualified students from pursuing the field, (b) require more homework, testing, and grading time be devoted to tracking down hidden mathematical errors than is devoted to working with the subject matter, and (c) limit the complexity, and therefore real-world applicability, of assigned problems. In this talk, the integration of the general-purpose mathematical tool MathematicaTM throughout the second semester of undergraduate physical chemistry will be discussed. Examples provided will demonstrate the feasibility of introducing the MathematicaTM language gradually over the course of the semester, allowing …

Exploring On-Line Communities - Supporting Physical And Health Education Professional Development Opportunities., Gregg Rowland, Lori Lockyer, John Patterson

Professor Lori Lockyer

In an era of limited resources across educational sectors, academics associated with faculties of education are under increasing pressure to find innovative ways to support their teaching and research activities, - activities with which collaboration and interaction with pre-service teachers, practicing teachers and fellow academics is crucial. As such, developing a sustained community that involves such representative members is paramount for academics. A team at the University of Wollongong has initiated this concept through research and development of the 'ActiveHealth' learning community for physical and health educators. Whilst it is envisaged that such a project will take time to establish, …

A Web-Based E-Portfolio Support System For Teacher Education Students, Susan Bennett, Lori Lockyer Jul 2013

A Web-Based E-Portfolio Support System For Teacher Education Students, Susan Bennett, Lori Lockyer

Professor Lori Lockyer

There is increasing interest in electronic portfolios as a means of collecting and presenting information about an individual’s attributes and experiences. As part of their course of study, learners may be asked to assemble a portfolio to provide a detailed, evidenced account of their learning experiences over an extended period of time. Employers are also beginning to use portfolios to identify employees that match their requirements. Portfolios have the potential to address the limitations of transcripts of academic achievement and references, which present a view of achievement that is mostly isolated from the learning context and the student’s experiences on …

Ict In Higher Education: Evaluating Outcomes For Health Education, Lori Lockyer, John Patterson, Barry Harper

Professor Lori Lockyer

This paper presents an investigation that examined and compared the effectiveness of collaborative tutorial activities carried out in both web-based and face-to-face learning environments within an undergraduate health education subject. Effectiveness of the different learning environments was measured in terms of observed learning outcomes, analysis of learner interactions and reported perceptions of the learners regarding their experience. Results demonstrated that web-based environments, with embedded collaborative activities, can effectively foster rich learning experiences that result in attaining positive learning outcomes.

Measuring Effectiveness Of Health Education In A Web-Based Learning Environment: A Preliminary Report, Lori Lockyer, John Patterson, Barry Harper

Professor Lori Lockyer

Driven by claims of efficacy, flexibility and resource effectiveness, higher education is increasingly utilising the Web as an instructional tool. The claims for pedagogical effectiveness are often just that – claims — and appear not to have been proven in the reality of subject presentation and evaluation. Thus, it is necessary to examine assumptions regarding the benefits of Web‐based instruction in terms of effectiveness. This article discusses aspects of an investigation which examined and compared the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS related collaborative tutorial activities carried out in both a Web‐based learning environment and a face‐to‐face class situation within an undergraduate health …

Computer-Mediated Communication Facilitating Physical And Health Education Teacher Preparation, Lori Lockyer, Gregg Rowland, John Patterson, Douglas Hearne

Professor Lori Lockyer

In response to the call for integration of information and communication technologies (ICTs) within the skills and knowledge-base preparation of physical and health education professionals, this paper outlines the design, development and outcomes associated with two applications. The initial project included the delivery of a traditional face to face lecture-based first year health education subject utilising a Web-based delivery approach, whilst the second case study describes the enhancement of the practice teaching experience for fourth year preservice teachers. These studies demonstrate the benefits of the integration of computer-mediated communication (CMC) in supporting the development of physical and health education teachers.

Quasi-Experiment Examining Cafeteria-Style Grading In Social Work Education, Brandon Youker, Lyza Ingraham May 2013

Quasi-Experiment Examining Cafeteria-Style Grading In Social Work Education, Brandon Youker, Lyza Ingraham

Brandon W. Youker Ph.D

Cafeteria-style grading system is an individualized student assessment method whereby students choose their assignments from an expansive and diverse pool of assignments. In this study, students are non-randomly assigned to two sections of the same social work course. The first section received cafeteria-style assignments and grading system (i.e., experimental group) while the comparison section received the traditional method of grading. Students in both sections video record a demonstration exercise; the recordings are reviewed and scored by experts from a panel of social work professors. Preliminary results show an effect on student attendance but no effect on GPA or student performance.

The Potential Of Perspectivism For Science Education, Jacob Pearce Apr 2013

The Potential Of Perspectivism For Science Education, Jacob Pearce

Dr Jacob Pearce

Many science teachers are presented with the challenge of characterising science as a dynamic, human endeavour. Perspectivism, as a hermeneutic philosophy of science, has the potential to be a learning tool for teachers as they elucidate the complex nature of science. Developed earlier by Nietzsche and others, perspectivism has recently re-emerged in the context of the philosophy of science in the work of Ronald Giere. Giere presents a compelling case that scientific theories and scientific observation are perspectival by using science itself. There are many tangible examples already present in science textbooks which, when approached in a certain way, offer …

Computer Literacies And Australian Indigenous Communities: Sharing, Scaffolding, And Supporting In An Online Learning Environment, Michelle Eady, Irina Verenikina, Wendy Nielsen Mar 2013

Computer Literacies And Australian Indigenous Communities: Sharing, Scaffolding, And Supporting In An Online Learning Environment, Michelle Eady, Irina Verenikina, Wendy Nielsen

Michelle Eady

Current reports indicate literacy rates among adult Indigenous Australians remain low despite years of improvement initiatives. Synchronous learning technology has potential to provide literacy and training to Indigenous learners living in remote communities. Although considerable research has been devoted to the area of internet-based learning in general, there is less research in the area of online synchronous learning opportunities for remote Indigenous learners. This paper offers insights gained from a unique research project that empowered members of a remote Indigenous community through a hands-on opportunity with synchronous technology where learners shared their strengths, and saw potential for their own futures.

Experienced Academics In Unknown Territory: Exploring The Use Of Online Synchronous Technology In A Teacher Education Program, Michelle Eady, Stuart Woodcock

Michelle Eady

As the number of online courses available from tertiary institutions increases, so does the demand for academics to utilize flexible approaches to learning opportunities. Many tertiary institutions in Australia cater to multi-location learners in various ways and commonly, experts in the field of distance learning and trained technological teams work together to service these learners. There are a growing number of distance learners and a constant increase in the variety of educational software employed by institutions. In this study academics become participants and engage in a focus group to discuss their experiences and thoughts of online learning. The participants then …

Twenty-First Century College Commentaries, Mary Ferguson Feb 2013

Twenty-First Century College Commentaries, Mary Ferguson

Mary J. Ferguson, Ed. D.

My parents were children of second generation post slavery parents; they valued the educational basics of math, reading and writing. When I revisited the requirements my parents demanded from us as child scholars, it reminded me of how simple things use to be in order to live an educated, simple and responsible life. ‘Go to college’ was their number one educational demand; having lived through the Great Depression, they valued God, education and our country. My siblings were the first generation of college students to obtain higher education or should I say four-year degrees in my family. School was a …

Diverse Perspectives On Adult Education And Lifelong Learning, Catharine Dishke Hondzel

Catharine Dishke Hondzel

Adult learning is a broad field of inquiry spanning a diverse range of topics, issues, and applications. As part of the course work for the graduate class in adult education and lifelong learning at Western University the contributing authors were asked to pick a topic related to adult learning that they found personally meaningful and write a chapter on that topic so that others could learn about it and use the knowledge to improve their practice. Within this volume you will find a number of different perspectives on adult education and lifelong learning. Unifying each chapter is a connection to …

Adaptive Testing For Psychological Assessment: How Many Items Are Enough To Run An Adaptive Testing Algorithm?, Michaela Wagner-Menghin, Geoff Masters Dec 2012

Adaptive Testing For Psychological Assessment: How Many Items Are Enough To Run An Adaptive Testing Algorithm?, Michaela Wagner-Menghin, Geoff Masters

Prof Geoff Masters AO

Although the principles of adaptive testing were established in the psychometric literature many years ago (e.g., Weiss, 1977), and practice of adaptive testing is established in educational assessment, it is not yet widespread in psychological assessment. One obstacle to adaptive psychological testing is a lack of clarity about the necessary number of items to run an adaptive algorithm. The study explores the relationship between item bank size, test length and measurement precision. Simulated adaptive test runs (allowing a maximum of 30 items per person) out of an item bank with 10 items per ability level (covering .5 logits, 150 items …
