Can Health Insurance Reduce School Absenteeism?, Ryan Yeung

Enacted in 1997, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) represented the largest expansion of U.S. public health care coverage since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid 32 years earlier. Although the program has recently been reauthorized, there remains a considerable lack of thorough and well-designed evaluations of the program. In this study, we use school attendance as a measure of the program’s impact. Utilizing state-level data and the use of fixed-effects regression techniques, we conclude that SCHIP has had a positive and significant effect on state average daily attendance rates, as measured by both SCHIP participation and eligibility rates. …

In his 1910 book, How We Think, John Dewey proclaimed that “the most important factor in the training of good mental habits consists in acquainting the attitude of suspended conclusion. . .” This Article explores that insight and describes its meaning and significance in the enterprise of thinking generally and its importance in law school education specifically. It posits that the law would be best served if lawyers think like thinkers and adopt an attitude of suspended conclusion in their problem solving affairs. Con el propósito de identificar diferencias en el desempeño académico entre hombres y mujeres, se aplicó una encuesta a estudiantes de ingeniería de cuatro instituciones de educación superior en el Municipio de Mexicali, México. Las variables evaluadas fueron trayectoria escolar previa, expectativas y capital académico. Los resultados muestran que existen diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre hombres y mujeres en las variables de promedio general de bachillerato, expectativas y algunos aspectos relacionados con su capital académico, a favor de las mujeres. Sin embargo, ellas no esperan obtener un mejor resultado académico durante su carrera cuando se comparan con sus compañeros varones. Los …

Mexico serves as a useful case for the study of privatization in higher education. This chapter looks at Mexico’s transformation from an eminently public system to an increasingly private one. The development of a strong and vibrant knowledge-based economy is linked in direct ways with successful graduate outcomes. Building evidence-based insights on such outcomes plays an important role in shaping planning and practice. With this broad objective in mind, this article analyses findings from the Graduate Pathways Survey, the first national study in Australia of bachelor degree graduate outcomes five years after course completion. It begins by discussing key rationales and research contexts to position the study internationally and in terms of research on graduate careers, quality assurance and planning.
