Ako Ako: A Progress Report On A Collaborative Peer Mentoring Pilot Programme, Chrissy Joyce-Erueti, Rhona Poutu-Shaw, Khurshid Mitchell

Chrissy Erueti

We present a progress report on a pilot peer-mentoring programme for staff at a tertiary institution. Ako Ako is a Maori methodology of learning that acknowledges that both partners share the power base of teaching and learning. Peer mentoring replicates this methodology and requires a paradigm shift from traditional mentoring where one is deemed to have higher levels of knowledge and skills. In this process the group engages in an exchange of knowledge and skills to enhance professional practice. Although mentoring was occurring within the institute, no formal structure was in place. A need was established and a framework to …

Rui Barbosa And The Argument For Teaching The Natural Sciences In The Brazilian Primary School Of The Xix Century [Rui Barbosa E O Ensino De Ciências Naturais Na Escola Brasileira Do Século Xix], Karl M. Lorenz

Karl M Lorenz

The paper discusses the ideas of Rui Barbosa on the importance of teaching science in the primary schools of nineteenth-century Brazil. Barbosa was one of the great parliamentarians of his time and one of Brazil’s most vocal advocates of educational reform in the nineteenth century. In 1882 Barbosa was directed to provide a written assessment of the1878 educational reform of Minister Leonçio de Carvalho. In the document that resulted, Barbosa states his rationale for why and how the natural sciences should be taught in the primary school. This paper relates Barbosa’s ideas on science teaching and argues that he was …

Os Livros Didáticos De Matemática Na Escola Secundaria Brasileira No Século Xix [Mathematics Textbooks And Brazilian Secondary Education In The Xix Century], Karl M. Lorenz, Ariclê Vechia

Karl M Lorenz

O Collegio De Pedro Ii E A Modernização Do Currículo Da Escola Secundária Brasileira [The College Pedro Ii And The Modernization Of The Secondary School Curriculum In Brazil], Karl M. Lorenz

Karl M Lorenz

How To Get It. Diagrammatic Reasoning As A Tool Of Knowledge Development And Its Pragmatic Dimension, Michael H.G. Hoffmann Jan 2004

How To Get It. Diagrammatic Reasoning As A Tool Of Knowledge Development And Its Pragmatic Dimension, Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Discussions concerning belief revision, theory development, and "creativity" in philosophy and AI, reveal a growing interest in Peirce's concept of abduction. Peirce introduced abduction in an attempt to provide theoretical dignity and clarification to the difficult problem of knowledge generation. He wrote that "An Abduction is Originary in respect to being the only kind of argument which starts a new idea." These discussions, however, have led to considerable debates about the precise way in which Peirce's abduction can be used to explain knowledge generation. The crucial question is that of understanding how we can get the new elements capable of …

Learning By Developing Knowledge Networks. A Semiotic Approach Within A Dialectical Framework, Michael H.G. Hoffmann, Wolf-Michael Roth Jan 2004

Learning By Developing Knowledge Networks. A Semiotic Approach Within A Dialectical Framework, Michael H.G. Hoffmann, Wolf-Michael Roth

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

A central challenge for research on how we should prepare students to manage crossing boundaries between different knowledge settings in life long learning processes is to identify those forms of knowledge that are particularly relevant here. In this paper, we develop by philosophical means the concept of a dialectical system as a general framework to describe the development of knowledge networks that mark the starting point for learning processes, and we use semiotics to discuss (a) the epistemological thesis that any cognitive access to our world of objects is mediated by signs and (b) diagrammatic reasoning and abduction as those …

Design Languages, Notation Systems, And Instructional Technology, Sandie Waters, Andrew Gibbons Dec 2003

Design Languages, Notation Systems, And Instructional Technology, Sandie Waters, Andrew Gibbons

Sandie H Waters

Notational systems, used in mature fields of study, are closely related to design languages. The future of a technological field depends on the ability to communicate ideas and changes with others in the field. Instructional technology is one field that can benefit from a notation system enabling designers to duplicate, execute, and communicate their ideas. In this paper, we look at several mature fields, including chemistry, musicology, and choreography, to discover elements where a mature design language and notation system have developed. We illustrate a number of dimensions that can help designers form their design languages and select the characteristics …

The Highly Questionable "Highly Qualified" Label, Elaine Hampton

Elaine Hampton

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is instrumental in the national movement toward the use of one short-answer test as the gate-keeping instrument to prevent or allow university graduates trained in education to enter the teaching profession. This investigation questions the wisdom of this test-based certification by looking at the impact on recent (university education program) graduates who have had difficulty passing the tests. Four of these graduates provided information via in-depth interviews. The interview data provide evidence that raises questions about the value of taking these people out of the teaching profession. The individuals provide evidence of …

Drama As A Means Of Improving The Advocacy Skills Of Non-English-Speaking-Background Students, Chamkaur Gill Dec 2003

Drama As A Means Of Improving The Advocacy Skills Of Non-English-Speaking-Background Students, Chamkaur Gill

Chamkaur Gill

This paper will discuss the problems facing overseas-Asian students who study law in Western universities and will deal with how drama can help improve their English-language oral-communication skills. A profile of the average student belonging to a high-context, relational culture will be provided with the aim of showing why such a student needs full-on immersion in oral English. An attempt will be made to suggest that the activities and materials employed by instructors using such a strategy can help lower students’ affective barriers and increase their confidence, motivation and spontaneity when speaking, while improving their non-verbal skills. The writer’s personal …

Content-Based Esl Writing Curriculum: A Language Socialization Model, Gulbahar Beckett, Virginia Gonzalez, Heather Schwartz Dec 2003

Content-Based Esl Writing Curriculum: A Language Socialization Model, Gulbahar Beckett, Virginia Gonzalez, Heather Schwartz

Gulbahar Beckett

In this paper, we propose a content-based, advanced level adjunct English as a Second Language (ESL) instructional approach for writing from a language socialization theoretical framework using basic principles of systemic functional linguistics (Halliday, 1994) and sociocultural theory of learning (Vygotsky, 1986). We emphasize an ESL curriculum that stimulates ESL students to learn domain specific knowledge, to develop cognitive and meta-cognitive learning and thinking processes, and to learn rhetorically and lexico-pragmatically appropriate writing (Raimes, 1983). We provide a complete review of the theoretical principles derived from research based on integrative curriculum for second language (L2) students. We explain how an …

Female And Male Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport And Higher Education: A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment, C. Keith Harrison Dec 2003

Female And Male Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport And Higher Education: A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment, C. Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The termination of a collegiate athletic career is inevitable for all student athletes. The purpose of this study was to explore student athletes’ perceptions of the athletic career transition process. One-hundred-andforty- three (n = 143) National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II student athletes were administered the Life After Sports Scale (LASS) designed by the authors. The LASS is a 58-item mixed method inventory. The scope of this inquiry explored the qualitative section, which examined participants’ perceptions that were visually primed with a narrative description of a student athlete who made the transition out of collegiate sport successfully. Three major …

College Students' Perceptions, Myths, And Stereotypes About African American Athleticism: A Qualitative Investigation, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Examining the ‘natural’ athlete myth and utilizing the recent literature on cultural/social factors in athleticism, this study through survey research examines the myth of the ‘natural’ African American athlete. Participants consist of 301 university students from a large, traditionally White, midwest institution. The primary research question is to determine the attitudes of college students in terms of how they perceive the success of the African American athlete in certain sports. The purpose is to assess participants’ perceptions of the African American athlete and their opinion as to whether or not African American athletes are superior in certain sports (football, basketball, …

Resource Sharing In Online Self-Organizing Social Systems, Erin K. Brewer Dec 2003

Resource Sharing In Online Self-Organizing Social Systems, Erin K. Brewer

Erin K Brewer

Learning in structured instructional settings has been researched a great deal. As learner needs change educators have developed a number of alternatives to traditional education, such as correspondence courses, online courses, satellite broadcasts, intensive seminars, and other methods of instructor-facilitated distance education. Despite different delivery methods, distance education classes are often based upon an instructor-as-facilitator model, like that which prevails in face-to-face instruction and suffer from the same limitations of “instructor bandwidth” (i.e., serious restrictions on scalability). The literature shows that the size of a class is limited by instructor-student ratios. Automated systems have been proposed as a way to …

Boys And Girls "Doing Science" And "Doing Gender", Cleti Cervoni Dec 2003

Boys And Girls "Doing Science" And "Doing Gender", Cleti Cervoni

Cleti Cervoni

The gender gap in achievement in science continues to plague science educators in the United States  (AAAS, 2001). Strategies to close this gap have defined the problem in terms of girls’ lack of interest or their inability to survive in science classrooms.
Recent feminist scholarship has re-centered this problem of gender inequity not on girls, but on the nature of science and how it is taught in schools (Birke, 1986; Parker, 1997). Lesley Parker (1997) argues that it is schools that need to change and recommends a gender-inclusive science curriculum for schools.
My dissertation argues for a new framework and …

Contradictory Literacy Practices Of Mexican-Background Students: An Ethnography From The Rural Midwest, Heriberto Godina Phd Dec 2003

Contradictory Literacy Practices Of Mexican-Background Students: An Ethnography From The Rural Midwest, Heriberto Godina Phd

Heriberto Godina PhD

This ethnographic study explores the contradictory literacy practices of 10 high school students of Mexican background from the rural Midwest. The author uses the term Mexican background to encompass both settled Mexican Americans and recent-immigrant Mexicanos. Literacy is investigated through English and Spanish in a sociocultural context. Findings reveal how Mexican-background students demonstrate different literacy practices in their homes and communities than those acknowledged at school. Educators in the school setting did not recognize Mexican-background students’ linguistic proficiency. In school, Mexican-background students were viewed in terms of their limited-English status and were mostly enrolled in low academic tracks. At home, …
