Preparing Preservice Teacher For All Learners: A Book Critique On Gifted Education And Gifted Students, David S. Wolff

If is often said that undergraduate coursework in gifted education is a paragraph or chapter in a book. Without specific coursework regarding gifted education and gifted learners, preservice teachers are partially equipped to meet the diverse learning needs in today’s classrooms. This article provides a review of Gifted Education and Gifted Students: A Guide for Inservice and Preservice Teachers by Margot and Melin (2020) as a recommended primer for preservice teachers to gain basic knowledge and understanding of who gifted learners are and how to provided appropriate services for them.

Research suggests that America today is more politically polarized and less capable of conducting civil public discourse than at least the last several decades. These greater cultural factors unsurprisingly seem to have trickled into American schools, as teachers report increased divisiveness and conflict, particularly directed toward historically-marginalized groups, in class. Acadia University, a small liberal arts institution, has for 15 years, offered a unique practicum experience for its teacher interns enrolled in the preservice Bachelor of Education. Students travel to Shanghai, China for a period of four months to teach English as a Second Language in school classrooms ranging from grades kindergarten to six. Investigating The Development Of Possible Selves In Teacher Education: Candidate Perceptions Of Hopes, Fears, And Strategies, Jill E. Gonzalez-Bravo

The theory of possible selves, as proposed by Marcus and Nurius (1986), framed a two-staged instrumental case study designed to give voice to an often-neglected source of insight: teacher candidates. The collection and analysis of hopes, fears, and process strategies gathered from a cross-section of thirteen candidates and alumni from a private Midwestern institution informed teacher educator practice and increased understanding in regards to influences that shaped teacher identity development. The applied theoretical framework allowed for the assessment of participants’ knowledge, skills, and dispositions, aided in the identification of perceived preparation needs, and enabled an appraisal of program effectiveness.
