Abstinence-Only Sex Education In Public Schools: A Special Commentary, Julianna Williams
Abstinence-Only Sex Education In Public Schools: A Special Commentary, Julianna Williams
Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education
Abstinence Only Until Marriage (AOUM) programs, also known as Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA) programs, are non-comprehensive, religion and values-based programs that are still widely used, and supported by government funding, in schools around the United States of America. Content of these programs include messages of misogyny, heteronormativity, and racism, among others. Existing research has indicated that sex education programs lack efficacy in prevention or reduction in teen pregnancy and STI infection. However, little research has investigated the potentially harmful impact of biased messaging to long term sexual and mental health and well-being. In this commentary, I highlight some of the …

The Rural Educator
Despite lack of funding, rural schools can serve as sites of learning, community, and excellence. We need to understand both the problems and opportunities to make good education policy. This commentary was originally published in the October 6th edition of The Daily Yonder.

Beyond Proving It: How C3wp Helps Students Write Nuanced Arguments And Purposeful Commentary, Kristin E. Smith
Language Arts Journal of Michigan
When students look at an issue from a variety of perspectives, they begin to think critically about sources and biases, and they are able to write more nuanced arguments. This article examines the changes in students' written arguments when a teacher implements the mini-units from the College, Career, and Community Ready Writers Program using articles that present diverse viewpoints on relevant issues. The students in this article were new to the College, Career, and Community Ready Writers Program, and they participated in three mini units from the program. The author describes how she implements these three mini units, and analyzes …

Mining Laban Studies As A Critical Pedagogical Praxis, Sherrie Barr
Mining Laban Studies As A Critical Pedagogical Praxis, Sherrie Barr
Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)
Mining the writings of Laban and his collaborators through a pedagogical lens reveals philosophical underpinnings of a transformative teaching-learning paradigm, one that shares characteristics with the field of critical pedagogy. An examination of the ways this connection unfolds becomes the entrée to this query. The commonly held beliefs that are in play reflect the innovative thinking of the leading pioneers of the two discourses. In each pedagogical praxis, themes of inclusion, reciprocity, and collaboration can be evidenced in a caring and ethical environment with teachers honoring individual learners while simultaneously celebrating the diversity of experiences students bring to the classroom. …

Commentary: Both/And: A Response To De(Fence)/Defense, Jonathan Lee, Laurel Lampela
Commentary: Both/And: A Response To De(Fence)/Defense, Jonathan Lee, Laurel Lampela
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In this paper we introduce non-dualism and begin by answering the questions posed by the editors of this journal. We address the theme of de(fence) and propose a paradigmatic shift. For many years, art teachers have advocated tirelessly in defense of the field, fighting for funding and legitimacy in an educational landscape that prioritizes other subjects. While the reaction to fight is appropriate, art reveals another way. It aids us in our task of living in the liminal, and it gives us the chance to suspend our judgments and forego meaning in favor of experience. Art can help us transition …
