Deaf Inclusion And Accessibility In The Dance Field, Samantha M. Doyle, Caroline S. Clark
Deaf Inclusion And Accessibility In The Dance Field, Samantha M. Doyle, Caroline S. Clark
Symposium of Student Scholars
Over the past ten years, the dance field in the United States has shifted towards practicing diversity and inclusion. However, there are still underrepresented groups in dance, such as the Deaf community. There is a current lack of pedagogical content to help dance teachers and choreographers be inclusive to Deaf dancers. This research addresses the gap by discussing issues and access for Deaf and hard-of-hearing (HOH) dancers in the dance classroom and on stage. To do so, I present a literature review and analysis of current scholarship with a goal of bringing awareness to the current lack of accessibility to …
Adapting Applied Behavior Analysis In Autism Intervention To Improve Individualized Education For Children With Autism, Elisabeth Alonso
Adapting Applied Behavior Analysis In Autism Intervention To Improve Individualized Education For Children With Autism, Elisabeth Alonso
Symposium of Student Scholars
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) intervention for children diagnosed with autism provides detailed assessments of the clients’ abilities and guides skill acquisition with the goal of transitioning the client, often into a typical school classroom. The lack of accessible autism training and access to knowledgeable ABA professionals in school settings prevents teachers from engaging with their students on the autism spectrum. Furthermore, this gap in training does not equip teachers to follow through with the research-based interventions to improve students’ quality of life. Teachers must have an understanding of ABA in layman’s terms to improve the child’s classroom functioning. This research …

Abstract
Public Law 103-3 cited as the Family and Medical leave Act of 1993, was enacted to grant family and temporary medical leave under certain circumstances. The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was created for Americans who feel that their career takes valuable time away from their children and loved ones. FMLA allows eligible employees up to 12-weeks of …
Reaching Multilingual Learners Through Translanguaging Pedagogy, Audra Thompson
Reaching Multilingual Learners Through Translanguaging Pedagogy, Audra Thompson
Symposium of Student Scholars
What are the best practices for reaching multilingual learners in K-12 classrooms? While researchers have sought for an answer to this query, several linguists have put forth the concept of translanguaging, “the deployment of a speakers’ full linguistic repertoire without regard for watchful adherence to the socially and politically defined boundaries of named (and usually national and state) languages” (Otheguy et al., 2015, p. 283). This innovative pedagogy has forged its way into many Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) courses in the Inclusive Education Department at KSU, but what are the benefits of teachers using translanguaging pedagogy …

Promoting Bilingualism And Biculturalism In Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Families In South Korea, Jooeun Kim
Promoting Bilingualism And Biculturalism In Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Families In South Korea, Jooeun Kim
Symposium of Student Scholars
In 2006, the South Korean government set forth a policy supporting Korean education for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) children, indicating they were incapable of learning “proper” Korean under foreign parents (Hong, 244). Considering how such children continue to be deprived of the right to acquire mother tongue in the South Korea, there have been recent efforts to develop bilingual coaching programs. In the long run, examining how it can be practically implemented and sustained as a helpful program can contribute to CLD children’s bilingual and bicultural development. The current study aims to explore perspectives and experiences of bilingual coaches …
Unsung Muslim-American Women Heroes, Natasha N. Dossani, Haley Ward
Unsung Muslim-American Women Heroes, Natasha N. Dossani, Haley Ward
Symposium of Student Scholars
Which Muslim-American women made an impact on the world? How can educators integrate inspiring Muslim-American women into an elementary social studies curriculum, centered around Anglo-Saxon culture, experiences, and history? The purpose of this presentation is to provide “mirrors and windows” to brilliant women, that have been traditionally marginalized throughout American history (Bishop, 1990). Schools are doing an injustice to their students by excluding content about Muslim-Americans in the mainstream curriculum. Our research will bring attention to unsung Muslim-American women, who are often unknown to students and teachers. We will highlight the women’s achievements, courageousness, and perseverance to bring about change, …
The Influence Of Mechanical Properties Associated With Exercise Equipment Padding On Maximizing Performance And Minimizing Potential Soft-Tissue Injury When Performing High-Intensity Weight Lifting Exercises, Robert Hewston
Symposium of Student Scholars
The intention of this study is the measurement of mechanical properties such as resilience and compressibility associated with exercise equipment padding in order to determine the ability to minimize potential soft-tissue injuries while performing high-intensity weight lifting exercises. ASTM standards were used to test the resilience and compressibility of five different exercise equipment padding specimens. The specimens consisted of standard bench press foam, composite foam, polyethylene foam, a single yoga mat foam, and double yoga mat foam. The resilience and compressibility are tested to determine the amount of deformation each sample can experience and the level of energy returned back …
Native Americans: Invisible Mirrors & Cracked Windows, Ashley Sadler
Native Americans: Invisible Mirrors & Cracked Windows, Ashley Sadler
Symposium of Student Scholars
The purpose of this project was to analyze the traditional narrative in relation to how Native Americans are depecited in public schools across America. The traditional narrative, which can consist of textbooks, literature, videos, etc. often present inaccurate, harmful, and ignorant stereotypes about Native Americans to students. Often the instructional methods related to the subject of Native Americans provide students with little to no opportunities to explore both their history and cultures in multiple manners. Often presented as a monolithic group, the traditional narrative has done little to present Native Americans in a dynamic, positive, and realistic manner. Focusing on …

In the field of Applied Behavior Analysis, tangible items (i.e. toys) are often used to help learners meet goals in academic, social, and adaptive living skills. While use of high preference reinforcers has been linked to improved performance, repeated use of a single item can cause satiation and reduce effectiveness. Using a variety of reinforcers can allow therapists to minimize these satiation effects (Bowman et al., 1997; Koehler & Iwata, …

Where Are We With Education About Mental Health And Illness: A Survey Research, Symphony Williams
Symposium of Student Scholars
The purpose of my research is to investigate public awareness of mental health and illness. This study is paramount because of the mental health crisis our world faces today. I conducted a survey research in which I used Google Forms and asked a series of questions about the participants’ education, experiences, and opinions on mental health and illness. The total participants were 67. The analysis of survey responses resulted in several findings. First, 34.3% of the 67 participants had a diagnosed mental illness, and 72% of those participants suffer from some form of depression while 77.8% suffer from anxiety. These …

Still A Forgotten War? Investigation Of College Students' Understanding Of The Korean War., Symphony Williams
Symposium of Student Scholars
The purpose of my research is to investigate how much and what knowledge college students have on the Korean War. This study is important because the Korean War is often referred to as a “forgotten war” but is a significant event in American history, as well as an ongoing issue in today’s world. Investigation into what college students know and believe about the Korean War, as well as, where and when they learned this information, is critical in evaluating and reforming how the Korean War is taught in US schools. I designed a survey using Google Forms, and gathered results …

Access To Higher Education: Do Schools “Grant” Success?, Nathaniel Jones
Symposium of Student Scholars
University education can lead to upward income mobility for low-income students. Being exposed to other student’s life experiences that are different from their own may highlight activities and actions that they may want to consider aiding their success. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median weekly earnings in 2019 for all workers in the U.S. was $969. Of those, U.S. workers who held bachelor’s degrees earned $1,248. In 2016, the Brookings Institute found that Pell Grant recipients and first-generation student loan borrowers attended universities that had lower graduation rates and higher loan default rates in comparison to …

Nigerian Educational System And What Influences It Has On Young Children, Alexandria Alexander
Symposium of Student Scholars
The motives for this study on Nigeria is to compare it to that of the U.S. and to explore their educational system and the impact it has on ECE Programs. While contrasting these two educational systems we will focus on the countries literacy rate, how learners are supported in their education, and is there any access to early childhood care and educational services. My information is mainly based off of literature review. However, it can be considered as a qualitative study because I also conducted an interview with A Nigerian native. In conclusion my research methods adopted are both a …
Comparative Education Understanding Why The United States Underperforms In International Test Scores: Learning From China, Japan, Canada, And The United Kingdom, Mama Aye-Addo
Symposium of Student Scholars
The United States has slow but surely fallen in their standing in global education. Education affects everything from economic standing to innovation for the future and thus the decline in educational standing presents a problem for the U.S. This research uses the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development’s Programme for International Student Assessment as a baseline for where countries place relative to the United States. The study then uses Canada and England to represent nations with ideologies and economies most similar to the United States as well as China and Japan to represent countries that differ. Each nation’s governmental structure, …

Modeling Functions: Modified Falling Ladder Task
By the time students graduate from high school, the knowledge of functions has shifted from a conceptual understanding to a procedural approach, where the understanding of functions is based upon memorized computational steps that can’t be modeled. A focus on the computational aspect of functions can have a long-term effect on students’ ability to understand the meaning of functional relationships, negatively affecting their overall ability to reason mathematically. Without educators making a conscious decision to recognize the value of modeling and force its’ inclusion, there are few opportunities to experience the application of functional …
