The overarching goal of the Institute for Interdisciplinary STEM Education (iå_STEMe) at Georgia Southern University is to improve student engagement and learning outcomes in STEM courses through immersion in authentic, real-world, problem-based and place-based educational settings. To accomplish this goal, iå_STEMe has partnered with 10 middle and high schools located in Georgia to incorporate a series of reasoning modalities developed to meet the requirements of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to develop STEM literate citizens capable of making informed decisions, and to open up opportunities to fill the growing need for STEM professionals. This dynamic presentation from award winning; Kaija Spencer will provide the foundation from which education is based . The definition of S.T.E.M. will be discussed. And provide a complete outline of how a traditional school changed from the traditional 6 subject schedule to a school that embraces the full integration of all subjects throughout the entire school day. Participants will understand how to start the process of changing the instructional plan of a school by first building a team, have realistic SMART (Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound) goals, and a strategic and systematic plan for implementation.
