The pool of aviation mechanics and technicians is not growing fast enough to support the projected growth in aviation. A group of stakeholders has come together with a big idea to help attract the next generation of talent.

Current aviation college programs aim to prepare the next generation of aviation professionals to meet the needs of the ever-increasing global demand for air travel. Previous literature has identified gaps in competencies that employers noted in young graduates. This study attempts to narrow that gap by focusing on the curriculum of the top 20 aviation programs in the U.S. to compare the curriculum to the skills employers cited to assess whether the courses offered in the current programs reflect the actual needs of the aviation workplace. One stumbling block for students considering becoming a STEM major has been introductory math courses. A new, innovative precalculus course being developed and delivered by five USG institutions may provide a solution. MATH 1113e Precalculus Emporium combines lessons learned from the Math Emporium model pioneered at Virginia Tech with elements of MOOC delivery to create a highly interactive and support rich online course model. While the pilot debuted in January 2014 with students and faculty from five institutions, the larger vision is for the course to become available for all USG institutions in the near future.

Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019)

This session will describe two programs Georgia Tech has in place to help nurture STEM education leaders, one for graduate students and one for faculty. Both programs use the learner-centered teaching paradigm, backwards design as a framework, and peer learning communities. Alumni of the two programs will share their experience and benefits in a panel format. Facilitators invite analysis of program ideas for possible transfer to other contexts.

Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) and Atlanta Metropolitan College (AMC) have established the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Program since Fall-2007 academic year. The program was initially jointly funded by the MESA California Consortium and after the first year operation, completely funded by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. The MESA model was established to assist in increasing the retention of educationally disadvantaged students (minorities, female, low-income, first generation college students) majoring in STEM areas and helping them transfer to four-year institutions in Georgia and across the nation.
