Impact Of Covid-19 On Course Presentation & The Efficacy, Madison Gartman
Undergraduate Research Conference
With the appearance of COVID-19 in March of 2020, classes on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University’s (SFASU) were forced to move online out of concern for the health and safety of the faculty and students. Due to this fact, the modality of many courses was forced to change. With the change of modality, some students and faculty- who had limited experience with online classes- were forced to conquer the entirety of their course load and instruction online. However, with this abrupt change arose some creative teaching techniques that aided students’ remote academic success for the remainder of …

The study is a secondary analysis utilizing data collected at two time periods (2000, 2006) from the Social Capital Community Survey (Saguaro, et al., 2009). The data set is a national survey of community dwelling older adults aged 55-100 (2000, N=3044; 2006, N=2011). To address the research question, three-step hierarchical regressions were conducted. Results indicated that those with better incomes, higher education, were married, Caucasian, were relatively younger, and reported higher frequency of religious attendance reported significantly better health. Although minority status was negatively associated with health, when African American and Hispanic older adults attended religious services frequently, their reported …

Advertisements play an important role in nearly everyone's life. Every single day people view a wide range of advertisements. With the population of America becoming more and more diverse in terms of race it would make sense that advertisements would reflect that same concept. However, it does not appear that advertisements actually reflect this idea. In the 2010 ads for the Super Bowl, only four out of the sixty-seven featured an African American in an ad. (Lapchick, 2010) Not only are minorities not being adequately represented in advertisements but they also only get featured for certain ads. African Americans find …

The Artist Residency And Lumen Printing, Austin Cullen
Undergraduate Research Conference
The artist residency is a critical and informative experience that is privileged to few, and revered by many. Creating work in a completely foreign environment can yield beautiful and new work that the artists could have never conceived of making. Artwork could be made about anything, but choosing a specific subject matter, or theme, can be very challenging. This difficulty arises from lack of knowledge, experience, or most importantly, being bored with one's surroundings. Artist residencies, often being in other countries and always providing a new atmosphere, can be a great way to jumpstart new artwork. Residencies are incredibly difficult …

Symposium on Arts and Research
The ASBMB curriculum for an undergraduate degree recommends a set of skills that can be acquired only through laboratory courses and research experience. Based on a previously reported purification scheme for BSA (Odunuga and Shazhko, 2013), we designed a robust, reproducible, cost-effective, safe and enquiry-based undergraduate biochemistry laboratory course that encompasses many of the skill-sets recommend-ed in the ASBMB curriculum. Our work not only modi-fied certain steps in the scheme, it also included addi-tional steps to enhance student learning and skill ac-quisition. Salt precipitation, ion exchange and size ex-clusion chromatography were employed by students to purify BSA from cow plasma. …

Bright Ideas Conference
With the rising cost of tuition, college students have difficult decisions to make between school, work, housing, food, utilities, medical bills, to name a few. For example, according to the Huffington Post, there are over 58,000 homeless college students in the United States (Ashtari, 2014). Colleges have a task of keep their students safe, which is reiterated in their student codes and university policies. Yet, one of the aspects rarely taken into consideration is the students’ access to food, which is a safety concern. While most colleges offer meal plans, there are issues with the upfront expense of meal plans …
