Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic experiences that can lead to negative, lasting effects on the health and well-being of the child. Students who have ACEs are more likely to struggle in school, have difficulty paying attention, lack self-regulation skills, and struggle to control their emotions and behaviors. Teachers and school staff may not recognize or know how to support students who have adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) which can impact the child’s occupational role as a student. This mixed method action research study examined how teachers interpreted student’s maladaptive behavior, whether teachers recognized evidence of students’ past traumas and whether they associated traumatic experiences with maladaptive behaviors. Qualitative data was collected via interviews and quantitative data was collected via the Feifer Assessment of Childhood Trauma Form.

Toni Morrison’s Beloved introduces many characters who exhibit clear signs of trauma due to their past as African American slaves, however, one character in particular stands out: Sethe. Sethe’s life as a slave led her to experience and do horrendous things. The worst being the difficult and violent decision to murder her own child, Beloved, in an effort to prevent her child from being forced into slavery. Research indicates a need for pre-service teachers to become trauma informed, as mental health issues are on the rise. This study examined trauma informed indicators in higher education teacher preparation programs, as well as in pre-service educators’ classroom behavior management plans. This was to determine in what ways, if any, would this information increase knowledge of how preservice educators are prepared for trauma informed practices in schools. The quantitative research portion included a small sample of preservice teacher classroom behavior management plans that were analyzed for the use of trauma informed indicators. The purpose of this professional learning module is to create and promote trauma-informed leadership. Throughout the module, leaders will also learn about the six trauma-informed principles on establishing a trauma-informed site. The design of this professional learning module is to prepare leaders in addressing situations involving trauma at their site. This module can be used individually for leadership training and/or professional development. It should take one to two hours to complete. Once the training is completed, an assessment will be given. Participants in the PLM will learn about ACEs, the brain science related to trauma, behaviors associated with ACEs in the classroom, strategies to help mitigate the impact of ACEs in the classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to apply these strategies to real-life situations within the PLM.
