Understanding Student Perspectives On Higher-Level Mathematics Courses At A Higher Level Institution On The U.S.–Mexico Border, Diego Rivera
Understanding Student Perspectives On Higher-Level Mathematics Courses At A Higher Level Institution On The U.S.–Mexico Border, Diego Rivera
ANTH 4306/6306 Anthropology of Borders
This project explores students' perspectives on mathematics courses at a higher-level institution along the U.S.–Mexico border. Traditional mathematics instruction is often delivered from an objective standpoint, but this study investigates how students perceive courses like college algebra and calculus when taught using a practical approach that incorporates their cultural background and personal knowledge. The study involves interviews with three students from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), majoring in Statistics, Biomedical Science, and Engineering. The paper includes detailed descriptions of the students and their responses, concluding with insights derived from the interviews.

Education Doctorate Books
The book From Program to Practice: Purpose, Empowerment, and Persistence in Doctoral Education is a collection of graduate student writings from the 2022 summer Education Doctorate Residency at Winona State University.
"As practitioners in education and adjacent fields embark upon their journeys toward earning a doctorate, they soon realize the importance of this collection’s theme: the intersection of purpose, empowerment, and persistence (PEP). These concepts prove critical to a student’s success at all stages of the doctoral process, from program admission, to topic exploration, to graduation. The essays in this collection explore how students define, identify, and leverage “PEP” as …

At first glance, a college campus might look like a place of equal opportunity– communal dorms, shared dining halls, and similar course loads. However, arriving on campus is not where the college access conversation ends if students’ basic needs are not met. Food insecure students are at elevated risk of poor academic performance and delayed degree completion, with first-generation students being particularly vulnerable. Swipe Out Hunger is an organization that partners with colleges to reduce food insecurity among students by allowing those with extra dining hall meal swipes to donate them to food insecure peers. If implemented at VCU, Swipe …

This text includes chapters from instructional designers, university faculty and staff, and undergraduate and graduate students, and the text has been divided into three sections to reflect these varied perspectives. Each section begins with research-based perspectives, but also contains more personal narratives at the end. While the context of most of the chapters is the United States, there are also chapters with a Canadian context. It is also important to note that, as of the first half of 2021, the pandemic rages on, and mentions of COVID-19 in the following chapters will be reflective of the state of affairs in …

Promoting Student Success In Uncertain Times: Five Practical Strategies For Academic Leaders During The Pandemic, Kent Willis, Amanda Ratcliff
Education Doctorate Faculty Works
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, academic leaders at colleges and universities across the United States have faced the nearly impossible challenge of rapidly introducing remote operations. Remote instruction is not new within higher education, but deploying all services and instruction from face-to-face to online in a matter of days comes with underlying challenges. Provosts, deans, associate deans, and department chairs are pressed to make quick decisions about instructional continuity with little time for deliberation. Many leaders feel unsure about these decisions and worry about future implications. Student-centered decision-making has never been more critical than now. Here are five practical …

3D-printing is a relatively inexpensive additive manufacturing method used to create tangible objects. As a relatively new technology, the true capability of 3D-printing has not yet been fully exploited, especially in academic and research/teaching settings. Through this work, 3D-printing in a classroom and research environment is employed as a tool for creation of fully customizable, three-dimensional molecular models and for the visualization of theoretical abstract concepts.

This research set out to enhance engagement in computer programming, a known difficult subject area for 1st year BSc in IT students. Programming lecturing staff had strong reservations about introducing group work in their classes, claiming group work was a counter-productive learning approach. The study was framed on a mixed methods action research approach, and a number of interventions, centred on reflective learning and social learning, were introduced. The findings indicated a strong preference by students to work in groups when tackling computer programming problems, but no strong evidence was found that reflective or social learning activities enhance programming skill …

Preparing University Adjunct Faculty To Teach, Dejuanna M. Parker, Leo T. Mcauley Brown, Barbara D. Holmes
Education Doctorate Faculty Works
Colleges and universities employ adjunct faculty to fill personnel needs not met when availability of full time faculty is insufficient; as such, academic leaders should find ways to ensure the success of this vitally important faculty group. This qualitative research inquiry studied adjunct faculty perceptions regarding factors deemed necessary to acquire and hone pedagogical competence in university settings. Using a phenomenological approach, the research team studied how eight college and university adjunct faculty, both pre-service and in-service, perceived teaching preparation. Deliberate Practice Theory undergirded this inquiry. Three themes emerged from the study: preparation to teach, teaching content, and institutional support. …

The Making Of Nova Southeastern University: A Tradition Of Innovation, 1964-2014, Julian M. Pleasants
NSU Books and Book Chapters
Nova Southeastern University is a flourishing university with a fascinating past. Arising from the shared dream of local community businessmen in Broward County, Florida, the university was chartered in 1964. At the time, it had no buildings to its name--just an empty plot of land and a dedicated group of visionary advocates.
On the fiftieth anniversary of NSU’s founding, this book tells the amazing story of what is now one of the largest not-for-profit universities in the United States. Today, Nova Southeastern University serves more than 27,000 students and has produced more than 150,000 alumni. Its main campus in Fort …

Climbing The Ladder To Leadership And Other (Un) Told Stories Of Black Women Administrators In Higher Education, Marian Muldrow
Journal of the International Association for the Study of the Global Achievement Gap
This narrative reflection presented vacillates between an exploration of the historical journey of the Black women and a modern day Black women who is “persisting in the journey toward self-definition…” (Collins, 2000, p. 121). This history eludes to the underrepresentation of Black women that originates in colleges and universities, which results in the underrepresentation in higher education administration. This narrative and interpretative review considers race and highlights factors and barriers that perpetuate the glass ceiling in higher education for Black women.

Getting To Finished: Strategies To Ensure Completion Of The Doctoral Dissertation, Barbara Holmes, Lillian Robinson, Angela D. Seay
Education Doctorate Faculty Works
This paper reports the results of focus group conversations with thirty-four doctoral students enrolled in an educational leadership program. Doctoral students were asked to provide suggestions and strategies used to complete the doctoral dissertation. The results of these conversations reinforce the value of the collaborative cohort and the proactive interdependence students experienced as a result of working together. These findings highlight the need to examine how doctoral students experience the university context particularly as it relates to the dissertation phase of study.
