Insurance business managers who fail to retain employees experience reduced profitability and productivity. Employee retention issues in the insurance industry negatively affect recruitment and training costs, employee engagement, and operational efficiency. Grounded in Herzberg’s 2-factor theory of motivation, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies that insurance company managers use to retain employees. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 5 insurance managers in New York and a review of company documents on employee retention strategies. Elementary school officials have reported difficulty motivating young African American boys to read. It is important that teachers understand why these children have not been motivated to read and create classroom environments that encourage reading motivation. A lack of student skill acquisition has hindered students between the ages of 11 and 14, from being academically successful. In addition, parental authority (PA) has been shown to initiate or hinder the development of intrinsic motivation (IM) and autonomy-supportive behavior (ASB). Literature has shown that IM and self-autonomy positively predict academic achievement (AA). The purpose of this study was to determine whether academic intrinsic motivation (AIM) and autonomy-supportive behavior (ASB) mediate the relationship between PA and AA. At a large, urban university in the Midwestern United States, graduation rates of first-generation college students (FGCS) who are the first within a family to be admitted and attend a 4-year post-secondary institution of higher learning have declined over the past decade despite programs instituted to improve student retention.
