Funding of education has long been a major topic of discussion in both the public and political arenas. How tax dollars are spent in the area of education is now at the forefront of this debate with the advent of mechanisms which are designed to hold schools accountable for their funding. The chief mechanism of accountability is standardized testing achievement by students.

The purpose of this study is to compare the occupational stress felt by school counselors at the elementary level to the occupational stress felt by secondary school counselors. Occupational stress is measured using the Occupational Stress Inventory Revised Edition (OSJ-R). Participants in this study are employed school counselors randomly selected from the Directory of Illinois Public Schools and the Missouri School Directory. Analysis of the data is conducted using a 2-sample t-test of means to determine if the level of occupational stress differs in the two groups. The purpose of this project is to examine the effect:, of an elementary At-Risk Program. Challengers. over a nine month period. The intent of this. program was lo increase student self-concept and academic achievement measured by grade point averages. Identification of students who participated in this study was done by a needs assessment survey completed by the teachers. The needs assessment survey includes identifying characteristics for students "at-risk." In an effort to assess the impact of year-round school on teacher stress, a sample of 39 elementary school teachers from a year-round school was compared with a sample of 35 teachers from an elementary school in an adjacent district that is on a traditional schedule. A measure of teacher stress, the Teacher stress Inventory (TSI), was administered to the teachers after they had completed one-half of the school year. Analysis of the data revealed that there was no significant difference in stress levels between the year-round teachers and the teachers on the traditional schedule. Stress levels were in the …

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study was to compare the developmental levels of spelling in first and second graders with measured performance in the classroom over a period of ten weeks.

It was the hypotheses of t his study that children in first and second grade who were functioning at pre-Phonetic stages of spelling abiIity would have difficulty passing weekly classroom spelling tests . A second hypothesis was that students who were developmentally at higher levels would be able to achieve better on weekly spelIing tests.

This project was an exercise in assessment of student writing in the Francis Howell School District. This district began a writing program in the fall of 1986, emphasizing 45 minutes of daily writing instruction and practice each school day . After approximately 44 weeks of exposure to the program, the assessment was conducted in the winter of 1988.

A published narrative essay test, the CAT Writing Assessment System, was given to 280 randomly selected students in grades three through six. Of these, 80 were used in the training of a rater team which then inter-scored the remaining 200 essays. They …

This study was designed to investigate the library education of teachers in the Lutheran elementary schools in the Saint Louis area. It vas hypothesized that teachers were not prepared to use the library as it should be used, partly because they had not been taught to do so, and that their feelings of how adequately trained they were would depend on when and where they had received their education.
