The Importance Of Social And Emotional Learning In The Classroom, Kayla Bilotta

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Life changes on a daily basis and that includes the lives of students in the classrooms. Many students seem to be struggling with social and emotional skills that help them be successful in learning and in life. I created this capstone with the purpose of learning how the implementation of social and emotional learning (SEL) can benefit and impact students, with an end focus on students at the elementary school level. I created a professional development presentation for elementary educators that provided the same information I collected during my research stage. My project also includes an example of ten free-standing …

A consistent problem in teaching has been keeping students engaged and motivated in their studies. Typically these problems were equated to either a student’s inability to make a connection to the information, the material being too difficult, or a student feeling inadequate. To promote a deeper understanding and discover ways to ease these issues, this capstone project used the following question as a focal point, what drives students’ motivation to achieve and what steps can be taken to develop a growth mindset in students? This project was centered around growth mindset as it has shown to be an effective tool …

Because of the global coronavirus pandemic of 2020, understanding how to do online learning well has become a necessity for educators. Online learning, though it has clear advantages over face-to-face learning such as the flexibility of time and space, variety and speed of delivery of materials, and anonymity, it is not without significant challenges that must be addressed in order for students to be successful. Best Practices For Code-Switching In The Hmong Adult Ell Classroom, Morgan Hightower

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

For many years, students were discouraged from using their first language. In the classroom, rules were set on only using English as soon as they entered the room, and signs were hung on the walls that encouraged them to only speak the target language. However, research now shows using a student’s native language can actually enhance their learning. This capstone uses pre-surveys, post-surveys, and 4 sessions of professional development to help answer the capstone question, In what ways can educators best support adult Hmong L1 learners to accomplish their English goals while uplifting and valuing their linguistic and cultural roots? …

Integrating Mindfulness Strategies And English As A Second Language Instruction, Samuel Trojan

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The guiding question addressed for this capstone project is: how can mindfulness be integrated into English Language Learner (ELL) curriculum in a way that promotes social, emotional and academic development? The motivation for this project was born out of a desire to address academic, emotional and social growth concurrently for ELLs in a way that addresses the specific needs of that population. To address these, mindfulness techniques are integrated into curriculum design. The rationale for this is that mindfulness techniques can have certain mental health benefits, social benefits, improve focus and create greater awareness in regards to academic, social and …

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Educational research suggests that the development of social-emotional skills for elementary aged students positively impacts academic progress. The social-emotional skills include self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, ability to build and maintain healthy relationships, and responsible decision-making. Yet, less research exists around the positive impacts of social-emotional learning (SEL) in the high school setting. The goal of this project was to identify ways to increase high schoolers’ social and emotional skills in order to help students manage the barriers that negatively impact engagement and achievement. This project reviewed the following research-based methods for improving students’ social-emotional skills: Zones of Regulation, Second Step, Responsive …

Developing A Framework For Citizen Science: Preparing Researchers For Success, Michelle Chmura

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Citizen science is a growing field of research that relies on public participation for successfully collecting and processing data in fields of ecology, astronomy and sociology. Citizen science has potential to connect diverse communities with science literacy, but historically has only reached a small portion of the population already invested in scientific research. Many citizen science projects fail to launch within the first year from researcher expectations not meeting volunteer expectations. Researchers face the same common pitfalls that others before them have with few stories sharing how success was achieved. A three day workshop was developed to explore the relationship …
