Creating A Nonprofit Organization To Reduce And Eliminate Disparate Access To Quality Environmental Education To Students That Are Black, Indigenous, And People Of Color And To Increase Overall Access To Education On Environmental Justice, Nicholas Leonard

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) have a disparate access to quality environmental education (EE) in proportion to their white peers. (Bell, 2016; Taylor, 2014). Furthermore, BIPOC also experienced a disproportionate share of the effects of environmental degradation and destruction. (NEEF, 2015). This capstone addresses the following question: How can a nonprofit organization reduce and eliminate disparate access to quality EE to students who are BIPOC and increase overall access to education on environmental justice? The capstone proposes an organizational plan to specifically address this question. The organization will create programming and curriculum of high-quality EE designed to engage …

Using Informational Websites To Foster A Connection Between Outdoor Education And State Park Preservation, Amanda Eckart

There is no shortage in research depicting the physical, mental and social benefits that students receive when they participate in outdoor learning. However, there were many barriers preventing classroom educators from taking their lessons into local nature areas. Two of these barriers being educator’s lack of confidence teaching outside and their unfamiliarity with local state parks. The Role Of Restorative Practices In Building Community, Increasing Student Learning And Reducing Racially Disparate Discipline In Secondary Schools, Lawrence Koszewski

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The highly negative outcomes of persistent racially disparate discipline for students and communities of color are well documented and wide-ranging. In response many districts are instituting Restorative Practices in order to reduce the racial discipline gap and mediate negative outcomes for communities. Research of these districts shows a reduction in suspension rates for all students although a racial gap persists. In order to maximize the potential positive benefits of Restorative Practices teachers, administrators and facilitators must fully and properly implement Restorative Practices. To do so will require support through clear, personalized and tangible Restorative resources. This project involved the production …

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

This project was created to answer the question how can a theatre curriculum be created for diverse upper elementary students? The paper follows one teacher’s personal journey toward confronting systemic racism and bias in elementary schools today. Through a new world view, the author addresses the physical and cognitive makeup of the upper elementary student and dissects factors that prevent students of color from academic achievement in drama classes and beyond, such as race, income, immigrant status, trauma, and resistant learners. The author then details how a culturally responsive theatre curriculum will help students of color develop their cultural identities …

The research question addressed in this project was: How does an art installation work to educate and persuade park users to practice pro-environmental behaviors at Sullivan Lake Park? The purpose was to raise awareness of the environmental problems at the author’s local park, Sullivan Lake Park, and inspire the community to practice habits that are more environmentally friendly. Sullivan Lake Park has environmental issues of trash in the lake and people feeding bread to the turtles and waterfowl. The research focused on barriers to pro-environmental behavior (PEB), influences on PEB, and communication to a diverse community through art. It is …

Sel In The High School Social Studies Classroom, John Gonzalez

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Educational research suggests that the development of social-emotional skills for elementary aged students positively impacts academic progress. The social-emotional skills include self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, ability to build and maintain healthy relationships, and responsible decision-making. Yet, less research exists around the positive impacts of social-emotional learning (SEL) in the high school setting. The goal of this project was to identify ways to increase high schoolers’ social and emotional skills in order to help students manage the barriers that negatively impact engagement and achievement. This project reviewed the following research-based methods for improving students’ social-emotional skills: Zones of Regulation, Second Step, Responsive …
