In this research project, the author presents a curriculum for a Philosophy 101 college course that implements active learning techniques to enhance and motivate student learning. Teaching introductory philosophy is a difficult task due to the intricate nature of the subject matter. Teachers must discover instructional strategies that transmit philosophical knowledge more effectively beyond the employment of traditional teaching methods, such as a lecture, to their students. Based on this author's research, active learning methods can provide an effective instructional technique for those who teach introductory philosophy courses. "Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) occurs in 3% to 5% in school age children" (Sherman, Rasmussen, & Baydala, 2006, p. 1). This figure continues to grow due to diagnoses of ADHD, which were not identified earlier in young children. This increase in the number of students with ADHD effects educators and how they manage their classroom. The success of an educator is based on how well his or her students learn and how that educator manages the classroom environment.
