I worked with Ann Cornelius, VP of Operations, to learn more about the industry and the role of home medical equipment in patient care. My journey to pursue career in healthcare leadership helped me realize how crucial it is to understand the role of a leader in delivering a better care for the patients. To gain that experience, I reached out to the president of Mount Carmel East (MCE) hospital for a practicum opportunity under her staff. I worked with the executive team and other senior leadership team at MCE during my practicum. This practicum reflects the learnings from Ohio Health Department of Medical Equipment (Ohio Health DME), a branch of OhioHealth Home Care, with Heather McDavid who is the Director of Operations at Ohio Health DME. OhioHealth DME has five departments – Intake (Answers calls and customer calls for equipment), Complex Problem Solvers (CME), Respiratory Therapists (works with equipment such as CPAP vents, Non-Invasive Ventilator (NIV), BIPAP), Service Technicians (delivers bent metal, beds, pickup O2, and service, fix, clean equipment). The American Virtual Institute began as an opportunity to teach Hungarian high school students about American Culture in different areas of life. These meetings were to occur every Saturday over Zoom, starting in October of 2020. There were 14 different presentations, dispersed among the 3 AVI members to present on their corresponding day. AVI participants and Hungarian successfully collaborated to obtain more knowledge on each country through this practicum in regard to wellness, leadership, and understating culture.

This project involved an 8-hour workday everyday Friday and on site involvement in the strategic planning department at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. During this process, I was able to support providers specifically in the Youth Crisis Stabilization Unit (YCSU), Nursing Staff in BHP, President & Vice President of Behavioral Health.
