The Extent Of Dropouts In Public Schools In Richmond And Metropolitan Area, Donald Barham Beaman

Master's Theses

About the middle or the nineteenth century the graded school emerged, which resulted in a great number of failures, which, in turn caused an overloading of lower grades and many dropouts in the upper grades.l Although dropouts in large numbers began at about this time it has been only in recent years that they have been classified as a problem. The problem rises largely from the concept that everyone should be in school until eighteen, or until he completes high school. Statistics dealing with the trends of all youth show that eighty per cent enter the ninth grade and only …

The Principal's Part In Planning The Program For The Gifted Child, Jack Edwards Dickson

Master's Theses

A major responsibility of school administration lies in recognizing current trends in education. One or the current major trends in education today is that or discovering, planning and providing for the gifted child. More than ever, men and women with ability are needed in positions of influence in all fields of human relations and technical know- ledge. To discover and develop talent and ability, and to facilitate their use for common good, must be a major objective of the school and community. "The democratic ideal can be most fully attained when every individual has opportunity for educational experiences commensurate with …

The Growth And Development Of A Program For Exceptional Children In The State Of West Virginia, Marcia Walker Blandau

Master's Theses

West Virginia is a comparatively young state. Special Education in the public schools is younger still. Throughout the history of West Virginia, the state has had financial difficulties and political factions. When West Virginia became a state she had no institutions, no social organs to provide for the general welfare, no common schools, no normal schools, and no university. Within sixty-five years the state had provided twelve institutions tor exceptional children. And today, six years before the state celebrates its first centennial, West Virginia has a well established special education program.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the …

A Survey Of Supervisory Practices In Virginia Elementary Schools, John William Jordan

Master's Theses

The elementary principal today sees increasing emphasis placed upon supervision as a means of improving the instructional program for children. Just as business has recognized that supervision is a wise investment and a. necessity, so has education come to realize the value of proper supervision by a capable principal. "It any person in a supervisory position is not contributing to more effective learning the classroom, his existence in that posit ion cannot be justified." If it is true that, "the most effective way of supervising has not yet been determined" then it appears that find ing more effective supervisory practices …

The History And Significance Of The Student Cooperative Association In Virginia, Mercer Weldon Kay

Master's Theses

For a number of years it had been the hope of the headquarters staff of the Student Cooperative Association that a study be made of the history of the organization. The Student Cooperative Association is an outgrowth of the Cooperative Education Association which was organized in Virginia in 1905. There were a number of fragmentary and scattered references made to the work of the Student Cooperative Association and its predecessor, the Junior Community League. The majority of these articles were written in appraisal of an individual chapter or community accomplishment, with little or no reference made to a statewide organization. …

The Situation Test As A Method Of Problem Solving In Science Teaching On The Sixth Grade Level, Hilda Scott Harwood

Master's Theses

Research states that elementary science is about twenty-five years old -- a recent addition to the curriculum. Changes in a new area in elementary teaching usually come slowly. The rapid development of the science program has resulted from the tremendous pressure of various groups to gain child attention. The weight of the national and international events have forced public opinion to consider science teaching in the elementary school as a necessity.

The American elementary school is a unique institution. It is the foundation for the citizens in a democracy. This assigns to the elementary school teacher many professional tasks. She …
