Education has always been a privilege. Most of us do not realize this. Opposition to the implementation of diversity and social equity has littered history. Many modern inventions and improvements were conceived under circumstances that included dire poverty and social inequity. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy recognizes and acknowledges the historical underrepresentation and marginalization of culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse groups, both universally, and particularly, in STEM education and professions. “Analyze, Acquire, Apply, And Write” As A New Learning Model In Science, Jeong Choe

I have developed a new teaching and learning model called AAAW, which stand for Analyze, Acquire, Apply and Write. This model grows from action research and unique experience in teaching a biochemistry course to high school students who are talented in math and science. In this model, students first "Analyze" lab data to generate questions that lead them to "Acquire" background knowledge. Students then go back to the data and "Apply" their new knowledge to better understand the data. Located in Aurora, Illinois, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is an internationally recognized, pioneering educational institution created by the State to develop talent and stimulate excellence in teaching and learning in mathematics, science, and technology (Marshall 2002). IMSA's advanced residential college preparatory program enrolls 650 academically talented Illinois students in grades 10—12. Students come from across the state of Illinois, applying as freshmen to enter the Academy in the sophomore class. The student body is 50% female and 50% male. During the last three years at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, we have been working on a partial reconstruction of Whitehead's "one subject matter," a course reconnecting biology, chemistry, earth and space sciences, and physics into an Integrated Science program.
