Interconnected Pathways On Youtube And Music Education: Youtubers And Their Stories, Donna Janowski
Interconnected Pathways On Youtube And Music Education: Youtubers And Their Stories, Donna Janowski
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Interconnected Pathways on YouTube and Music Education: YouTubers and Their Stories is a dissertation in the form of a collection of short stories and YouTube videos. Each story stands alone, but when read or viewed in its entirety, all the pieces connect to create a full picture of the project. The purpose of this research is to explore forms of “musicking” that are beyond the realms of music performance and composition by engaging with YouTubers who are subtly musical. North American music education has largely only recognized performance as a way of being musical, with composition and songwriting beginning to …
Is Responsible Leadership Possible? Exploring The Experiences Of Business Leaders, Educators, And Scholars, Kanina Blanchard
Is Responsible Leadership Possible? Exploring The Experiences Of Business Leaders, Educators, And Scholars, Kanina Blanchard
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study addresses a simple yet complex question: How can leaders come to make more responsible decisions within today’s highly economized context? Using narrative inquiry, I explore the stories which leaders in academia, business, and education tell about their experiences at what I call the point of impingement—the point where, as leaders, they must make decisions while facing conflicting and opposing norms and values. Underpinning the inquiry is Kempster and Carroll’s (2016) conceptualization of responsibility in leadership, and their argument that transformation toward a future in which responsible leaders address societal, ecological, and humanitarian challenges requires exploration of lived experience. …
Understanding Indigenous And Non-Indigenous Perspectives Of Reconciliation: A Case Study, Kaitlyn Watson
Understanding Indigenous And Non-Indigenous Perspectives Of Reconciliation: A Case Study, Kaitlyn Watson
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Reconciliation in the Canadian context is difficult to define (Graeme & Mandawe, 2017; Martin, 2009), but is often linked to the residential school system (Chrisjohn & Wasacase, 2011; Nagy, 2012). This instrumental case study examines how reconciliation is understood and activated among a group of educators and community members involved with a professional learning event held in Southern Ontario inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Employing narrative inquiry, and informed by decolonizing methodologies, seven event organizers, four presenters, and five attendees participated in conversational interviews. Two main themes were uncovered from the interview data. The first, reconciliation …
Knock On The Door: A Feminist Standpoint Theory Case Study Of Internationally Educated Chinese Females Finding Academic Positions In China, Chenzi Feng Zhao
Knock On The Door: A Feminist Standpoint Theory Case Study Of Internationally Educated Chinese Females Finding Academic Positions In China, Chenzi Feng Zhao
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study examines how gender shapes the experiences of internationally educated Chinese females in trying to obtain academic positions in Chinese higher education institutions from a feminist standpoint theory perspective. The interactions between education and gender in the contemporary globalized world have been an important theme in studies about education, gender, and social equity. Identifying the gaps in the statistic-based understandings of gender parity, this study adopts a qualitative narrative method and interviewed four female scholars who have applied and interviewed for academic jobs in China in the past four years. The findings are presented as four elaborate narratives. The …
A Critical Narrative Inquiry Of English Teachers’ Experiences Of Enacting A Pedagogy Of Multiliteracies In China, Lin Sun
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
When China’s Ministry of Education issued a series of curriculum change policies in 2011, major curriculum reform was initiated. Given the significant role that teachers play in curriculum reform, it is critically important to understand their experiences in their professional knowledge landscapes so that intentional and meaningful support for changes can be provided. This information will enrich the scholarly conversation on the theoretical and practical application of a pedagogy of multiliteracies in China and remind policy makers to consider the needs of teachers charged with implementing changes.
Situated in the global and local scholarship of multiliteracies, this empirical study explored …
The Currents Of Learning Motivation: Learners’ Stories From Arts-Integrated, Regular Classroom Landscapes, Irene Melabiotis
The Currents Of Learning Motivation: Learners’ Stories From Arts-Integrated, Regular Classroom Landscapes, Irene Melabiotis
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Intrinsic learning motivation can facilitate learners’ meaningful scholarship, creativity, and interest in life-long learning. Over time, however, elementary learners’ intrinsic motivation can decline. To meet this challenge, some inclusive educators have turned to arts-integrated instruction, which can facilitate positive outcomes for diverse learners in various subject areas. Our understanding, however, of learners’ quality of motivation when learning through the arts is limited. Accordingly, I explored four research puzzles through a narrative inquiry methodological framework, two of which included, (a) What stories do learners tell about their motivation when learning through the arts in their inclusive classrooms? and (b) What do …

Exploring The Complexity Of Policy Enactment Through Stories: A Sociomaterial Informed Study., Sarah Burm

This qualitative research study explores the meaning(s) Aboriginal education leads and school board administrators give to the Ontario First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) Policy Framework (hereafter referred to as the Framework) and how these meaning(s) are negotiated, storied, and enacted to produce particular processes, outcomes, and effects within the context of Aboriginal education in Ontario. The principles of Critical Narrative Research (CNR) combined with the sensibilities of Actor Network Theory (ANT) are drawn on to foreground the policy actors involved in the implementation of the Framework. Recruitment of research participants took place across both public and Catholic school boards …
Assessment Narratives: The Affordances Of Video Inquiry For Formative Assessment Of Multiliteracies, Mary C. Ott
Assessment Narratives: The Affordances Of Video Inquiry For Formative Assessment Of Multiliteracies, Mary C. Ott
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This case study investigating primary teachers’ use of video as a multimodal tool for formative assessment of multiliteracies demonstrates a need for a more nuanced understanding of formative assessment practices. The study asked: What stories do teachers tell about student achievement when they examine multimodal (video) evidence of students at work? And, in what ways might they use this information formatively? The data sources for the study were video clips teachers provided of students at work on routine multiliteracy activities, and interviews with the teachers framed by viewing the videos together. The resulting narratives were analyzed thematically, drawing on sociocultural …

From Their Perspective: How Adolescents And Young Adults Experience And Conceptualize Life And Occupation Surrounding Parental Divorce Or Separation, Laura R. Hartman
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Parental divorce affects adolescents’ emotions, routines, habits, occupations and relationships. The current body of research indicates that parental divorce leads to many unfavourable social, behavioural, and mental health outcomes for adolescents. This dissertation explores the daily lives and occupations of adolescents and young adults surrounding the transition of a parental divorce or marital separation.
This thesis contains four manuscripts in addition to the introductory and final reflection chapters. The first manuscript explores the current North American literature relating to adolescent life surrounding a parental divorce or marital separation, ranging form 1998 to 2014. The second manuscript provides an overview of …
