Teachers faced many challenges as they transitioned to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase of technology brought the concept of multiliteracies, broadening the term literacy to include the social and cultural backgrounds of students (Baguley et al., 2010), by acknowledging multimodality to represent and communicate using images, words, sounds and digital media (Walsh, 2010). Educational neuroscience has become an important role in understanding education and the association with brain development. However, few previous studies have applied neuroimaging techniques to multiliteracies research, which is an important literacy pedagogy addressing multimodal learning and cultural and linguistic diversity. This study used functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate the association of multiliteracies learning on adult English Second Language (ESL) students’ performance through multimodal tasks.

This study investigated the teacher perceptions in regard to the literacy learning and identity investment opportunities within their own Drama classrooms in Ontario. This study also addresses the challenges that were present within Drama classes when teachers tried to celebrate and incorporate cultural, linguistic, and semiotic diversity.

The theoretical tools of the study include theories on multiliteracies and identity investment. Data presented in this paper emerged from semi-structured interviews with five teacher participants.

However, few studies have shed light on Chinese teachers’ understanding and practices of multiliteracies. This qualitative case study investigated and displayed two Chinese teachers’ diverse perceptions and practices of implementing multiliteracies in teaching young children Chinese literacy in Canada. In this study I investigate the nature of digital mathematical performances (DMPs) produced by elementary school students (Grades 4-6). A DMP is a multimodal text/narrative (e.g., a video) in which one uses the performance arts to communicate mathematical ideas. I analyze twenty-two DMPs available at the Math + Science Performance Festival in 2008. Assuming a sociocultural/postmodern perspective with emphasis on multimodality, my focus is on the role of the arts and technology in shaping students’ mathematical communication and thinking.
