Students in high-school and college often times have but a vague and obscure concept of the Negro race, educationally, industrially, economically, and when in time these students seek to make and adjustment they find themselves handicapped . In choosing subjects of this nature there are certain causes or reasons which influence such a choice. In this case it is not my purpose to offer a defense for the study of Latin as an educational subject, nor is it my purpose to propose a special method of presenting Latin as to make it a more attractive part of the curriculum. I am influenced principally by the fact that among educators and Latin teachers themselves there is a widespread divergence of opinion as to what ought to be aims of teaching Latin.

Ability to read well is the most important ability that can be developed in the elementary school. Reading, properly mastered, not only renders excellent service throughout life but it greatly reduces the time and effort required to master the other school subjects. The elementary school, then, should strive to develop in each child the ability to read well. If it does this, it has succeeded in its most important work.
