For this Capstone Project, the researcher investigates how teachers and low-income families view the resources needed for students to increase their reading comprehension and what they thought could be done to improve access to those resources. Interviews included a fieldworker who has a child enrolled in a middle school, a middle school Community Liaison who is very familiar and close to low-income families and the issues they face with education. Additionally, three middle school students completed a survey on reading comprehension. This paper explores the importance of including multicultural awareness in school classrooms. Multiculturalism has been defined as the process of recognizing, understanding and appreciating cultures other than one's own. This study answers the following research questions, What is multiculturalism? Why is multiculturalism beneficial to students? How can teachers incorporate multiculturalism into classroom instruction? In a review of literature on the importance of incorporating multiculturalism, the research shows that there are many benefits and reasons to why multiculturalism should be incorporated in classrooms. The focus of this Capstone Project is on the effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on students' success. This is important because the level of student advocacy during this unprecedented time is a direct reflection of some of the deeper issues surrounding equity engraved into the current education system. Identifying and addressing these issues allows the movement to be made towards fixing them. This creates a better chance of permanent change long after the pandemic.
