Assessment Of The Impact Of Reading Mastery Implementation On A Group Of First To Third Grade Students Receiving Special Education Services, Christopher Martin Jones

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Reading Mastery was instituted with a group of first to third grade students receiving special education services as a supplemental reading intervention to regular education reading instruction. The students were enrolled in a kindergarten through eighth grade rural, Title I school with a high Native American population. Student performance was assessed with the easyCBM reading measure and the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System (Field Study, 2016).

Results showed that students who received the Reading Mastery intervention performed with mixed results on the easyCBM measure not making clear gains in all areas. The Fountas and Pinnell measure showed gains commensurate …

Report Detailing The Development Of University Articulation Agreements And Course Syllabi Revisions For The Engineering Drafting & Design Technology Program At Salt Lake Community College, Michael Stenquist

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This project is an attempt to close the gap between local industry, higher education, and the Engineering Drafting and Design Technology (EDDT) department at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). As a longtime drafting instructor in the EDDT department at SLCC, a need for change in industry from board drafting, to 2-D CAD, and now to 3-D CAD has occurred. Because of these changes, the program has continually been updated to meet the needs of the students and local industries. The purpose of this project detailed in this report was first, to explore the drafting needs of professionals working in the …

Using Simultaneous Prompting And Computer Assisted Instruction With Pictures To Teach Narrative Writing Skills To Students With Significant Cognitive Disabilities, Bonnie J. Larson May 2016

Using Simultaneous Prompting And Computer Assisted Instruction With Pictures To Teach Narrative Writing Skills To Students With Significant Cognitive Disabilities, Bonnie J. Larson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Students with significant cognitive disabilities often struggle to express themselves with written language. This project examined the effects of combining simultaneous prompting and computer assisted instruction, including picture icons, to teach students with significant cognitive disabilities to create narrative stories. Participants included seven students with significant disabilities currently being taught in a self-contained special education classroom located in a public elementary school. Participants had educational classifications of autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, or multiple disabilities. A multiple probe across behaviors design was used and instructors measured the number of sentences written by participants in each computer session. Sentences were defined …

Form-Content Discrepancies In The Narratives Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Two Elicitation Contexts, Brigid M. Crotty May 2016

Form-Content Discrepancies In The Narratives Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Two Elicitation Contexts, Brigid M. Crotty

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between form (grammar) and content (narrative structure) in stories elicited in two contexts (story generation, retell) from school-age children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as they participated in a narrative intervention program. This project extended the literature by allowing for examination of the relationship between form and content in a group of children who demonstrated adequate grammatical skills in the presence of poor narrative skills. Further, this study may shed light on potential differences that exist between two commonly used elicitation contexts, retell and generation, for obtaining narratives from children.

Conversational Alignment: A Study Of Neural Coherence And Speech Entrainment, Kristen M. Jensen, Stephanie A. Borrie, Breanna E. Studenka, Ronald B. Gillam

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Conversational alignment refers to the tendency for communication partners to adjust their verbal and non-verbal behaviors to become more like one another during the course of human interaction. This alignment phenomenon has been observed in neural patterns, specifically in the prefrontal areas of the brain (Holper et al., 2013; Cui et al., 2012; Dommer et al., 2012; Holper et al., 2012; Funane et al., 2011; Jiang et al., 2012); verbal behaviors such acoustic speech features (e.g., Borrie & Liss, 2014; Borrie et al., 2015; Lubold & Pon-Barry, 2014), phonological features (e.g., Babel, 2012; Pardo, 2006), lexical selection (e.g., Brennan & …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this creative project is to examine the extent to which high interest opinion writing prompts for four 5th grade students with learning disabilities (LD) improve the planning, organization and structure of their opinion essays as measured by the total words they write on the topic (TWW) the number of correct writing sequences (CWS) the overall accuracy of their writing, and critical components of opinion writing (CCOW) in a timed writing sample when compared to low interest opinion writing prompts. Initially participants will select high and low interest writing topics using a prompt selection procedure. Given 50 potential …

Struggling Students' Use Of Representation When Developing Number Sense And Problem Solving Abilities, Allison L. Roxburgh May 2016

Struggling Students' Use Of Representation When Developing Number Sense And Problem Solving Abilities, Allison L. Roxburgh

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Through my experience I have found students often rely on concrete or pictorial strategies to solve mathematical problems. These strategies are great to build an understanding in mathematical concepts. However, using these strategies becomes a tedious task when working with multi-digit numbers to solve problems involving mathematical operations. For example, a student who relies on drawing base ten blocks to solve three-digit addition problems may experience fatigue, as this is not the most efficient means to solve problems everyday. Through my experience I have found that these strategies may hinder students' abilities to solve a problem correctly because they focus …
