Math Self-Efficacy Effects On Prisoners' Academic Achievement, Randall Peder Bergman

This study examined three hypothesized math-self efficacy (MSE) sources that inhibit adult basic education male prisoner mathematics achievement. Previous correctional studies indicated that United States prisoners tend to have low self-efficacy and therefore lower academic achievement (Greve & Enzmann, 2003). Adult education studies also indicated lower self-efficacy in adults older than age 20 who take coursework to complete their high school diploma (Jameson & Fusco, 2014). Survey studies of MSE factors from analysis showed that students who self-reported lower self-confidence, negative self-beliefs, increased math anxieties, and greater devaluation of math’s usefulness to their future employment have significant barriers to math …

The National History Day program has been utilized in a Southeastern Minnesota school on and off since Minnesota began participating in the program in the 1980s. This secondary data analysis sought to determine the impact that embedding National History Day programming would have on the achievement of students on two standardized tests, the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment III and the Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress. Existing research identified that National History Day curriculum was a disciplinary literacy strategy that would transfer skills to other subjects including reading and math when compared to scores from students that did not participate. …

This literature review explores the background of trauma, the physiological effects of trauma on the developing child, and effective trauma informed strategies to assist educators in meeting the challenging needs of all students, especially those who have experienced trauma. Longitudinal research shows that trauma is prevalent and its effects are long lasting. Various effects of trauma contribute to dysfunction in brain processes, which results in academic and behavioral deficits. Representation of African Americans, Latinos, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Alaskan Natives in the Physician Assistant (PA) profession is not growing at the same rate as in the general population, leaving these groups underrepresented in the PA profession. To increase the diversity of the PA profession, the diversity of matriculating PA students must first increase. The purpose of this study was to investigate the choice process of underrepresented minority (URM) and non-URM applicants and matriculants to PA school, to identify trends in the choice processes of URM individuals considering the PA profession. Recent research has shown that an astounding number of children have faced adverse childhood experiences. Due to this fact, many of the students sitting in American classrooms have traumatic backgrounds that can cause a variety of side effects including a lack of academic focus, depression, PTSD, and low social-emotional abilities. Schools are the perfect place to implement trauma sensitive frameworks to provide these students an accessible education. Effective trauma sensitive schools are relational, empowering, and consistent. With these traits, research has shown that depression and PTSD symptoms can be reduced, behavior problems can be decreased, and attendance can increase.

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to discover the lived experiences of Third Culture Kids transitioning to postsecondary education in the United States, and what role social media had in building or maintaining bridging and bonding social capital. A technology initiative was adopted in a Minnesota suburban school district integrating 1:1 iPad devices into the elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to determine the impact 1:1 iPad devices had on student engagement within the high school classrooms.
