This practicum addressed the need to develop an alternative method of teaching reading to learning disabled students who have experienced little success in this area. The necessity for implementation was documented by students' 1989 scores on the Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Basic Skills, reading portion. A baseline of students’ pre-intervention performance in oral reading, comprehension, and word recognition both in context and in isolation was established. These scores were compared with post-intervention scores and with students' 1990 scores on the Brigance Test, reading portion. This practicum was designed to improve the verbal skills of English 11 General students taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The four verbal areas which were targeted for improvement were: (a) antonym skills, (b) analogy skills, (c) sentence completion skills, and (c) reading comprehension skills as wen as overall SAT verbal performance. After pretesting to determine the baseline verbal skills of students in these areas, the researcher implemented a variety of verbal activities in order to improve students' skills in these areas. Using Metacognitive Strategies To Increase Reading Comprehension In The Social Studies Content Area, Joanne E. Moore

A large number of academic deficiencies among ninth and tenth grade students in a college preparatory school signaled a problem diagnosed as poor reading comprehension in the Social Students content area. The Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test and the Coopersmith Self-esteem Test were administered to ascertain these problems in comprehension and resulting poor performance on tests/quizzes. A teacher authored test readily showed that the problems did exist. Students were taught five metacognitive study skills strategies, grouped in cooperative leaning peer groups, and taught mapping or clustering to aid notetaking and recall. Based on a study of valuable literature, this writer decided to improve reading skills of 16 third grade Chapter 1 students, who had a reading deficiency of one and two years below grade level, through the infusion of creative narrative and expository writing into the reading curriculum. A review of available literature and the writer's own observation indicated that meaningful, correlated writing activities would improve comprehension of the written word. A ten week curriculum was planned and implemented, consisting of instructional strategies with an emphasis on creative writing, oral reading and listening skills. The practitioner developed and implemented an alternative to standard textbook/packet learning, Ninth graders, who were proven by testing as being deficient in four basic reading skills (stated main idea, implied main idea, fact/opinion, and following written directions), were remediated by utilization of the newspaper as a learning material source. The remediation program featured a multitude of newspaper-related activities, Four specific units emphasizing each of the targeted skills were featured in ninth grade high school English classes over a 10-week development period.
