Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A self-esteem building program was developed and implemented to reduce the failure and potential dropout rate of limited English proficient ninth grade Haitian students who were failing two or more academic classes. Self-esteem building exercises and counseling sessions were employed over a 10-week development period. Instruments for measuring self-esteem, The Piers-Harris Self-Concept Inventory (Piers, and Harris, 1977) and The Demos Dropout Scale (Demos, 1970) were used. The results indicated increased levels of achievement for the target group when comparing their pretest and posttest. It was concluded that building positive self-esteem improves academic achievement. (Appendices include the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Inventory, student …

The purpose of this project was to improve the academic performance of transitional first grade students by developing the students’ oral vocabularies. Pre- and post-implementation vocabulary ages were measured with the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R). Pretest vocabulary ages ranged from two years and zero months to five years and four months. Final test results indicated the vocabulary ages of the 19 participating students increased and average of 11 months. Individual student …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The author structured and implemented lessons for a model home economics program to aid limited-English-proficient (LEP) students in an elementary school district where a substantial number of students were identified as being educationally disadvantaged. The program's goals were to help the LEP students increase English language proficiency while acquiring content area skills and competencies. The program's structured lessons contained six basic components: vocabulary development, scripted lesson, audiovisual presentation, teacher demonstration, student hands-on activity, and teacher/student evaluation. After completion of the eight lessons, the twenty target LEP students demonstrated measurable, significant gains not only in content area knowledge, skills and competencies …

Teaching Esol To Adult Competencies, Gary A. Davis
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The author developed and implemented a program using adult based competencies in the ESOL classroom. A control group was taught the same grammatical skills by traditional methods without including adult-based competencies. The author's purpose was to see whether the group taught with techniques which included adult competencies would master each skill better than the control group. Thus, a conclusion could be reached that teaching to adult competencies affects learning performance in a positive way. The basic steps of the program were to identify the problem; set the objectives; plan the activities on a daily schedule; evaluate the results; and formulate …
