Improving Science Vocabulary Of Six Grade Migrant Students Through A Program Of Intensive Direct Vocabulary Instruction, Melba Q. Moran

The practicum proposal was directed at a targeted group of migrant sixth grade students who were performing below grade expectations in science. Remediation was provided in an effort to improve the migrant students’ comprehension and use of basic scientific terms. The remediation activities enabled students to develop comprehension through frequent purposeful drill and review of key scientific terms. Vocabulary was presented as an integrated activity. Pre and Posttest were administered to the migrant students. Mean scores showed at least a 20 percent increase in performance on unified science curriculum tests. Student grades also improve by at least one letter grade.

The ability of first and second graders to use reasoning skills was addressed by the implementation of strategies to develop inferential thinking and analogical reasoning. Piagetian theory was researched in reference to expected levels of cognitive development. The target group of students received instruction in problem-solving to enable them to make inferences. They also received instruction in determining relationships to enable them to solve analogies. Instructional strategies included: modeling, verbal rehearsal, metacognition, peer tutoring, manipulative learning, and discovery learning. The high percentage of students with difficulty in solving free-response problems related to the mole concept was addressed by implementation of reading skill strategies and computer aided instruction. Frayer models, semantic mapping and graphic organizers from Reading in the Content Area (RICA) were employed to increase student understanding of the scientific principles involved. Computers and a variety of computer programs from COMPress and Knowledge Factory were used by the target group for review, drill, and practice in relating their math skills to solving problems. The writer initiated and implemented a program designed to increase the higher cognitive skill of analysis in fifth and sixth grade Academic Excellence students. This was to be achieved by an eclectic approach involving language arts, mathematics, and social studies. The program employed daily and weekly lessons, as well as a three week research project. The primary objective was improvement of scores on the “Ross Test of Higher Cognitive Skills” as evidence by percentile upgrades on spring testing as compared to fall testing.
