Assessing The Correlations Between Non-Cognitive Factors And The First Semester Gpa Of Nontraditional Students At A Community College., Alexis Parent Ferrouillet
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
Ninety percent of the students enrolled at community colleges in the United States are nontraditional (NCES, 2001). According to Horn and Carroll (1996), characteristics of nontraditional student include: delayed college enrollment, financially independent of parents, worked at least thirty-five hours per week, had dependents other than a spouse, were single parents, and had not received a standard high school diploma. Because of these characteristics, nontraditional students can face a plethora of challenges in higher education and feel underprepared for college coursework. Upon enrollment into the community college with an open admissions policy, these underprepared students must take high stakes standardized …
The Impact Of Unified Enrollment On School Choice For Parents Of Students With Disabilities: A Phenomenology Of Real Choice, Bridget Denise Harris
The Impact Of Unified Enrollment On School Choice For Parents Of Students With Disabilities: A Phenomenology Of Real Choice, Bridget Denise Harris
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
The purpose of this phenomenological study is to investigate the effects of a unified enrollment system on school choice for parents of students with disabilities in a charter-dominant school district. Previous research indicated that charter schools provide parents with enrollment choices outside of the traditional public school (Rhim & McLaughlin, 2000; Finn, Caldwell & Raub, 2006).
This study was conducted in an urban, southeastern district that transitioned from a traditional school district to a district of independent charter schools. Research questions examined the availability of resources for parents to identify and receive placement in schools that are appropriate for meeting …
The Gifted Transition: A Phenomenological Case Study Examination Of Preparation Strategies Utilized By General Education Inclusion Teachers, Jawan Brown Alexander
The Gifted Transition: A Phenomenological Case Study Examination Of Preparation Strategies Utilized By General Education Inclusion Teachers, Jawan Brown Alexander
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
If the United States is going to remain globally relevant and competitive with other nations, educational leaders should consider investing in their brightest students. According to the National Association for Gifted Students (2018), education officials are not investing in gifted education at the same rate or to the same extent that they are financing other areas of special education. Public education policy provides special needs learners with required instructional support and accommodation through mandatory supplemental funding; however, gifted students on the other end of the special education spectrum, also requiring and benefiting from intervention and accommodation, do not receive the …
The Lived Experiences Of Black Males In Special Education: A Phenomenological Study Of Parents And Students, Ashonta Lashonda Wyatt
The Lived Experiences Of Black Males In Special Education: A Phenomenological Study Of Parents And Students, Ashonta Lashonda Wyatt
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
Black males rank highest among students who choose to leave school; are suspended, expelled, or kicked out of school; score poorly on tests; have low GPAs and high rates of referral and placement in special education; and are underrepresented in gifted education (e.g., NCES, 2005; Whiting, 2004) as cited in Whiting (2006a). The purpose of this study was to generate an understanding of the attitudes and beliefs related to special education referral and placement of Black males as perceived by six Black students and their parents. The focus of this phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences of six …
Can A Latin-Based Intervention Improve Vocabulary Among Black Early Readers In The Second Grade: An Explanatory Analysis., Zwila Burks Martinez
Can A Latin-Based Intervention Improve Vocabulary Among Black Early Readers In The Second Grade: An Explanatory Analysis., Zwila Burks Martinez
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
This dissertation investigated whether a relationship between learning a Latin-based intervention in elementary school and improving vocabulary skills among 2nd grade Black students in low-performing schools. Research conducted 100 years ago revealed that the implementation of a Latin-based intervention improved vocabulary and reading skills (Perkins, 1918). In 2008, the results of a national survey revealed that only 15% of public elementary schools offered foreign language instruction, while more than 50% of private schools provided foreign language instruction. By examining a Latin-based intervention, the researcher hoped to identify positive outcomes in improving vocabulary skills for second grade Black students in low-performing …

Effect Of Block Scheduling On End-Of-Course Test Achievement For High School Students Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jose Anthony Sanchez
Effect Of Block Scheduling On End-Of-Course Test Achievement For High School Students Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jose Anthony Sanchez
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
In the United States over the past 25 years there has been a trend education using block scheduling in high schools (Zelkowski, 2010); however, there has been limited research into the impact that school-day schedules have on students diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of traditional scheduling versus block scheduling on Algebra I, Geometry, English II, and English III End-of-Course standardized assessment achievement for high school students diagnosed with ADHD. Data were analyzed from different Southeastern Louisiana high school sites. Student Algebra I, Geometry, English II, and English III …
