The Johnson Family Papers consist of correspondence, diaries, journals, speeches, reports, newspaper clippings, financial records, photographs, and other records relating to the family of David Bancroft Johnson, founder and first president of Winthrop (1886-1928) including, his wife Mai Rutledge Smith Johnson (Class of 1898), and their children, David Bancroft, Jr., Burgh, and Suzanne Johnson. The collection covers topics concerning David Bancroft Johnson’s work with the Columbia, South Carolina school system and the origins of Winthrop. Correspondents include Edward Southey Joynes, J.C.
