When Everyone Is Blamed, Are All Responsible? Defining The Legal Relationship Between North American Interfraternity Conference Fraternities/National Panhellenic Conference Sororities And Universities In Harassment Cases, Colleen E. Lofton
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
A complex legal relationship exists between North American Interfraternity Conference fraternities/National Panhellenic Conference sororities and higher education institutions. This legal relationship has been defined for issues such as association rights and hazing, yet little research exists about this relationship in harassment cases. My review of scholarship and case law revealed that control and level of claim specificity are needed to define the relationship in instances of harassment. By understanding this legal relationship, both North American Interfraternity Conference fraternities/National Panhellenic Conference sororities and universities can continue to address harassment in higher education.

Considerations For Antiracist Practices In Sorority And Fraternity Life: A Critical Race Theory Perspective, Michael A. Goodman, Crystal E. Garcia, Stacey D. Garrett, Kaleb L. Briscoe
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
This conceptual piece uses Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a way to recognize systemic inequities within sorority and fraternity life (SFL) communities, and to advance meaningful change on college campuses. We engage histories, literature, and current events to aid practitioners and scholars in deeper considerations around antiracist education in action. Further, we provide an accompanying case study to offer practical considerations for SFL practitioners, campus administrators, and scholars seeking to engage antiracist work within these communities.
“Where I Feel Most Accepted”: Creating Queer-Affirming Fraternity Environments And Experiences, Patrick R. Githens
“Where I Feel Most Accepted”: Creating Queer-Affirming Fraternity Environments And Experiences, Patrick R. Githens
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
This study focuses on what makes undergraduate fraternity chapters affirming for openly queer members. Although studies have been published on the demographics and experiences of non-heterosexual fraternity men, there needs to be more clarity regarding what makes chapter experiences welcoming and supportive for this population of members. Through qualitative grounded theory methodology with 10 study participants from Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) Fraternity, this research found that diverse membership, leadership, and supportive interpersonal relationships contribute to an affirming chapter environment. The findings and recommendations share what fraternity undergraduate chapters can do to create and foster a queer-affirming environment.

What’S Next: Historically White Sorority Chapter Officers’ Response To 2020 Racial Events, Ericka Roland, Colette Grubman, Keri Decay
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
The racial events of the summer of 2020 left many searching for answers regarding racial equity. This critical phenomenological qualitative study examines how chapter officers perceived the summer 2020 racial events that influenced their leadership regarding race and racism in their historically White sorority. The study findings revealed that the racial events catalyzed the chapter officers’ self-reflections, navigation of racial organization climate, and leading chapter reflection and education. These findings have important implications for practice and scholarship supporting chapter officers’ racial consciousness leadership development.

Geometric Shapes That Sing And Move: An Interdisciplinary Lesson With Pre-Service Teachers, Gladys Krause, Gustavo Velandia
School of Education Articles
Our work shares a practical example of an interdisciplinary lesson in which two teacher educators collaborated to integrate mathematics and music in an elementary mathematics methods course. This paper describes the process of collaboration in designing the lesson and shares original instructional resources to be used in the classroom. We also discuss what the pre-service teachers participating in the lesson shared about their learning experience, and what we, the teacher educators, learned from this experience. In presenting this work we aim to promote the opening of spaces in teacher preparation programs that allow pre-service teachers to develop their own instructional …

Fortaleciendo El Vínculo Con Las Familias Desde El Servicio De Orientación, Para Una Mejor Calidad Educativa, Mario Fung
Journal of School-Based Counseling Policy and Evaluation

International Education’S Academic Benefit: Potential For Community College Virtual International Exchange, Melissa Whatley
School of Education Articles
This study focuses on the potential academic benefit of virtual international exchange for community colleges and the students they enroll through a comparison of virtual exchange and study abroad. Using data from two community colleges in the US Southeast, this study draws upon the notion of socioacademic integration. Specifically, this study theorizes that both virtual exchange and study abroad have a positive relationship with students’ academic outcomes given their potential to foster socioacademic integrative moments. How- ever, given the scalability of virtual international exchange, it was expected that these programs are associated with a greater relationship to students’ academic outcomes …

From Terror To Pride: Supporting Faculty Through A Blended Learning Community Of Transformation During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mark J. Hofer, Adam Barger, Kelly Leffel, Katalin Wargo
School of Education Articles
The COVID-19 pandemic and the shift to remote, blended, and online teaching and learning presented universities around the world with myriad challenges. This rapid shift into uncharted territory, however, also created an opportunity for faculty developers to lead exploration of new pedagogies, challenging teaching assumptions. In this article, we share the story of how a center for teaching and learning led the shift to remote and blended learning through a community of transformation (Kezar et al., 2018). We share results from a survey of faculty following multiple professional development opportunities and explore themes that emerged from interviews with six instructors …

Lingua Asia: Decolonizing Heritage Language Education, Collin Absher
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The emergence of APIA programs within higher education has assisted in posing the question of what should be included in the K-12 history curriculum as it is lacking in Asian American history, African American history, and other marginalized groups’ history and information. In tandem, heritage learning Mandarin classes, while they do attempt to bring the students' writing and reading levels up to their speaking levels, instead focus solely on Chinese history, culture, identity, and societal problems. This is valuable; however, what of the Chinese American identity? There has been a surplus of over 200 years of Chinese American history within …
“The History Of Our History”: The Preservation And Development Of The College Of William & Mary’S Wren Building As An Historic Site, Katie Moniz
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Wren Building has been the core of the College of William & Mary for as long as it has operated. The history of the building is inseparable from that of the College. The traditions, politics, relationships, and events that make up the history of William & Mary have played out within the walls of the Wren Building—the tangible testimony of the College that has existed since the seventeenth century. For the William & Mary community, to understand the history of the Wren Building is also to understand its own identity. As such, examining the evolution of the conceptualization, preservation, …
Harnessing The Power Of Virtual Reality For Organic Chemistry Education, Jungmin Shin
Harnessing The Power Of Virtual Reality For Organic Chemistry Education, Jungmin Shin
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Understanding organic chemistry concepts heavily relies on visualization of the geometry of molecules and spatial arrangement of molecules during mechanisms. 2D textbook depictions have their limitations in visualizing the three-dimensionality of organic chemistry. Student learning outcomes could be greatly improved from 3D visualizations of these topics. This project explores the potential of an emerging technology, Virtual Reality (VR), being incorporated as a teaching resource for organic chemistry.
This paper discusses two trials for evaluating the potential of VR as a teaching resource for organic chemistry in select topics of the Diels-Alder reaction and R/S configurations and stereoisomers. The Diels-Alder reaction …

However, the number of LGBTGEQIAP+ Americans who self-realize their sexual, affectional, and gender expansive identities continues to increase, especially among younger generations (Jones, 2023)..."
Beyond The Exit: Moma Design Store & The Extended Museum Experience, Anna C. Wershbale
Beyond The Exit: Moma Design Store & The Extended Museum Experience, Anna C. Wershbale
Undergraduate Honors Theses
American art museum attendance soared following World War II as museums became popular education and entertainment destinations for the growing middle class. Shaped by the influence of 1980s Reaganomics and the effects of neoliberal funding policies, museum shops developed from small information desk ventures into a vital source of public relevance and financial sustainability. When given creative liberty and economic attention, the now standardized amenity presented the opportunity to sell institutional ethos. In light of neoliberal capitalism’s tendency to construe value primarily in economic terms, shops reveal how the art museum strategically assigns new meaning to its collection, mission, and …
Applying Street-Level Bureaucracy Theory To Understand The Barriers To The Implementation Of Restorative Justice In Public School Organizations, Eric J. Reed
The William & Mary Educational Review
This systematic review identifies the barriers to implementing restorative justice programs in public school organizations. Due to the novelty of restorative justice in schools, barriers often hamper the implementation process. Thus, it was necessary to identify barriers and how they can be mitigated. The PRISMA tool was utilized to examine 17 studies. The review harnessed Lipsky’s (1980) street-level bureaucracy framework to understand the roles of street-level bureaucrats in the education bureaucracy and to understand how the barriers align with the variables that comprise the framework. The results indicated that several barriers existed which include resources, bureaucratic discretion, and role ambiguity.
Development And Validation Of The Sense Of Belonging Among Counselor Education Students Survey (Sobaces)., Allison Fears
Development And Validation Of The Sense Of Belonging Among Counselor Education Students Survey (Sobaces)., Allison Fears
The William & Mary Educational Review
Sense of belonging among students has been studied extensively (Gopalan & Brady, 2020), and has been shown to be a predictor of success, engagement, and well-being in college students. While studies have investigated a sense of belonging amongst specific marginalized groups within a university (e.g. Duran et al., 2020; Lewis et al., 2021; Sims et al., 2020) there have been few studies that examine a sense of belonging among master students in counselor education programs. This paper will outline the development and validation of a new instrument, Sense of Belonging among Counselor Education Students (SOBACES).
Engaging Latinx Students: A Path To Life-Long Learning, Paola Mendizabal
Engaging Latinx Students: A Path To Life-Long Learning, Paola Mendizabal
The William & Mary Educational Review
Although the Latino ethnic group is the largest minority and the fastest growing subgroup in the United States, they are one of the most underserved groups in public schools. This is due to many systemic issues; however, this paper focuses on student engagement. Increasing student engagement decreases student dropout rates. If we can foster high levels of engagement with Latinx students in K-12, they are more likely to graduate high school possibly with aspirations to further their education. This conceptual paper aims to answer the following questions: What factors inhibit and/or contribute to Latinx students' engagement? How do we engage …
Moving Forward In The Wake Of The Pandemic: Shifting From Schools Acting Alone To Engaged Partnerships With Families And Communities, Sheri S. Williams
Moving Forward In The Wake Of The Pandemic: Shifting From Schools Acting Alone To Engaged Partnerships With Families And Communities, Sheri S. Williams
The William & Mary Educational Review
Workplace shortages are a top concern for schools in times of calm and even more troubling in times of stress. Burnout is especially widespread in stressful situations of disrupted learning, trauma, and discord (e.g., Diliberti & Schwartz, 2022; Thomas et al., 2019). In the wake of the pandemic, educators struggled to deal with the stressors on their own (IES, 2022). It became clear that schools could no longer work in isolation. Moving forward in the wake of the pandemic required an intentional shift in purpose from isolated classrooms to interconnected partnerships with families and communities. In the path to recovery, …

Contextual Influences In Tp(A)Ck Research: Bronfenbrenner And Beyond, Judi Harris, Ting Huang
Contextual Influences In Tp(A)Ck Research: Bronfenbrenner And Beyond, Judi Harris, Ting Huang
School of Education Book Chapters
This critical review examines the past 15 years of scholarship about contextual influences in TP(A)CK to better understand its theoretical bases. While Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory is usually applied in this work, either implicitly or explicitly, its articulation is most often incomplete and/or inaccurate, with some confusion evident about the nature and foci of multiple, intersecting systems of contextual influences. We argue for a more comprehensive way to theorize context in future TP(A)CK research, using Bronfenbrenner’s systemic explanations of the complex and interdependent aspects of contextual influences and actors. We also recommend additional focus upon indirect, intersectional and sociocultural influences …
