Are there turtle fan(atic)s on your holiday shopping list? Do you find yourself receiving terrapin-related gifts from friends and family who know of your passion for Logo? You are not alone. It seems a fondness for "pixelated" Logo turtles has engendered an attraction to the reptiles themselves for more than one Logo enthusiast. This month's column shares some non-electronic turtle resources.

One popular clasroom puzzle is called an "alphabit", a word from which smaller words can be formed by rearranging the component letters. Some simple Logo tools may assist in this educational activity, so that your students can concentrate fully upon researching and forming words, instead of dividing their attention between such exploration and the mechanics of the game.

Dot puzzles are often given to preschool and kindergarten children for recreation and number sequence review. Versions with numbers up to 100 can be used with older children. Others appropriate for students in early elementary grades label successive dots with addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts. This article discusses how to use dot puzzles with Logo tools.

Magic squares are used as exercises in mental calculation and motivated practice in mathematical problem-solving. As such, they can be especially effective teaching tools in the beginning of the school year. When used for addition review, paper-and-pencil media are perhaps most appropriate for magic square work. But if you would rather emphasize the problem-solving aspects of magic square work (play?), some simple Logo tools can assist your students' exploration of these ancient puzzles.

At the West Coast Logo Conference in Los Angeles in February of 1989, Seymour Papert spoke about instruction versus construction. Logo encourages the latter. Dr. Harman's Global Mind Change also speaks of construction, but on a much larger scale. When our students experiment with recursive structures, could they not be bringing some cosmically familiar creative drama into conscious awareness?

Turtled designs make mathematical patterns viewable in graphic form. Since it is easier to remember a series of numbers that fit an overall pattern than it is to memorize seemingly random numbers, it makes good pedagogic sense to help children to recognize multiplication table patterns by drawing them with the turtle.

Turtles are wonderful "objects to think with", as Dr. Papert says. But they also can be interesting objects to think about in cultural, metaphorical, and literary contexts. What patterns emerge when we view the turtle as a cross-cultural symbol? The search for answers to this question can inspire in-depth comparative historical, anthropological, and philosophical inquiry for your students.

Does the notion of Logo worksheets seem slightly incongruous to you? Does simple recursion escape you? Somewhat self-contradictory perhaps, like a lasting fad or the only choice? If so, you have discovered oxymorons. Oxymorons can stimulate eager word study and serious humor in the Logo-infused classroom environment.

Inflation can inspire enjoyable classroom exploits with syllabication, sequencing, and homophones. This article discusses classroom activities involving Logo and word inflation.
