Increasing Sustainability By Going Paperless: A Wmu Case Study, James Amos, James Kison

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

This is a study analyzing the use of digital signatures to reduce paper consumption at WMU. The poster demonstrates ways in which technology promotes sustainability by saving time, fuel and paper.

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Introduction

What influences teacher’s instructional decision in the classroom? Our study uses nationally representative data to test whether there is an association between data-informed district/school-level improvement efforts and data-informed instruction at the classroom level.

Evaluating Pre-Service Teacher’S Knowledge On Teacher Codes Of Ethics: Challenge Faced By Malaysia’S Teacher Education Institute, Moi Mooi Lew, Brooks Applegate, Zek Chew Lim, Wellington Edna

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Introduction

Teachers have great responsibilities both inside and beyond the classroom. To exercise those responsibilities, they need mastery of ethical knowledge and decision-making skills (Fenstermacher, 1990). Ethical knowledge, or knowledge that enables someone to examine the foundations of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, is not culturally bound and refers to the principles applicable to diverse perspectives and interests (Ragbir Kaur, 2012). In Malaysia, the Teacher Codes of Ethics (TCEs) comprise statements articulating teacher accountability to four types of stakeholders, ie., students, parents, self, colleagues and the teaching profession. It is an ethical declaration to regulate and monitor teacher’s specific obligation to stakeholders …

A Comparison Of Barriers To Teaching And Learning Of Mathematics And Science Across A Three Year Study Of The Misconceptions Management Professional Development, Crystal Stein

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Science and Mathematics Misconceptions Management (SaM3) is a statewide collaborative effort between the Michigan Mathematics and Science Centers Network and the Michigan Department of Education to provide middle and high school science and mathematics teachers with professional development opportunities.

The research questions include: 1) What are some barriers to teaching and learning mathematics and science? 2) What are the similarities and differences of barriers to teaching and learning mathematics and science in different parts of Michigan?

Answers to these questions will 1) inform stakeholders about the barriers to implementing mathematics and science educational improvement programming, 2) show changes to educational …

A Comparison Of Students’ Perceptions Of Stress In Parallel Problem-Based And Lecture-Based Curricula, Sonia Wardley, Brooks Applegate, Deyab Almaleki, James Van Rhee Apr 2014

A Comparison Of Students’ Perceptions Of Stress In Parallel Problem-Based And Lecture-Based Curricula, Sonia Wardley, Brooks Applegate, Deyab Almaleki, James Van Rhee

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Introduction

What is stress? Research asserts that stress is the mental state that results from an inability to cope (Burton 2004)

Why focus on stress?

  • Persistent stress can lead to serious psychological problems such as interpersonal difficulties, depression, anxiety, and even suicide (Shapiro 2000)
  • Several studies have found up to a third of medical students experience stress-related problems

The importance of this study comes from: A review of the extent literature suggests there is no systematic inquiry of the effects of stress experienced by students in LBL and PBL curricula in PA education

To What Extent Is The Established Conceptual Framework Of Animal Behaviour Portrayed In Textbooks?, Andrea M. K. Bierema, Renee S. Schwartz Apr 2014

To What Extent Is The Established Conceptual Framework Of Animal Behaviour Portrayed In Textbooks?, Andrea M. K. Bierema, Renee S. Schwartz

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

In 1963, Tinbergen revolutionized the study of animal behaviour by revamping the conceptual framework of the discipline. His framework suggests an integration of four questions: causation, ontogeny, survival value, and evolution. The National Research Council Committee on Undergraduate Biology Education to Prepare Research Scientists for the 21st Century (2003) suggests alignment between current research and undergraduate education. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to determine if the conceptual framework used by animal behaviour scientists, as presented in current primary literature, aligns with what students are exposed to in undergraduate biology education. After determining the most commonly listed textbooks from …

A Monte Carlo Study Of The Optimal Rank Order Relationships With Criterion Scores (Ororcs), Hongyan Cui, Brooks Applegate, Warren Lacefield, David Hartmann Apr 2014

A Monte Carlo Study Of The Optimal Rank Order Relationships With Criterion Scores (Ororcs), Hongyan Cui, Brooks Applegate, Warren Lacefield, David Hartmann

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

This dissertation study contributes to the field of measurement. It introduces a method to determine keys for a kind of test items that

  1. Depict a specific situational context and provide a set of multidimensional alternative reactions to that situation for the subjects to rank according to their best judgment (SRT).
  2. An examinee’s response to an item is a multidimensional ranking of the alternative options.
  3. One administration of the SRT yields measures of multiple traits, so that there is no need to administer multiple criterion instruments.
