Today there is much discussion about the functions of various school personnel specialists. Because of the rapid growth of these specialists—the counselor, the psychologists, and the social worker—many questions are being asked, such as: Should guidance workers be generalists or specialists? What certification requirements should be met? Should the three disciplines—counselors, psychologists, and social workers—work as a team or individually? Finally, should counselors, psychologists, and social workers teach as part of their function in the school?

A critical shortage of teachers became an acute threat to society following World War II according to Jantzen (1959). Because of the shortage of teachers, many institutions of higher learning and a number of interested groups have discussed and made studies on means of recruiting prospective teachers, as brought out by Riccio(1961). The studies that have been made on prospective teachers expounded mainly on the age students decided to become teachers and influences from parents, relative-teachers, teachers, guidance counselors, and teaching experience.

The purpose of this study was to create a counselor's handbook of apprenticeable training opportunities in Utah for the State Board of Education. Current manuals published by the Utah Apprenticeship Council and State Board of Education were incorporated into the new handbook along with additional materials gathered by the writer of this paper. By creating an up-to-date, usable and complete handbook of apprenticeship training opportunities in Utah for counselors, particularly in the secondary school system, it was hoped that students, as well as other people interested in apprenticeship training, would receive more direction and aid from those counselors contacted.
