Differentiating And Accommodating Ocd And Anxiety In Mathematical Contexts, Madeline F. Gavares
Differentiating And Accommodating Ocd And Anxiety In Mathematical Contexts, Madeline F. Gavares
Interdivisional Studies Summer Fellows
Students in mathematics classrooms may experience emotional and cognitive challenges that affect how they engage with coursework and assessments. While math anxiety has been widely documented, less attention has been given to how obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), particularly checking behaviors, may influence students’ experiences in math settings. This study explores how students who report math anxiety and those who report OCD symptoms describe their engagement with math tasks and test-taking. Drawing on survey and interview data from students and teachers, this study examines how these experiences are articulated and perceived in academic math contexts, rather than evaluating ability or outcomes. By …
The Importance Of Diverse Characters In Children's Literature For Identity Development, Gabrielle Revaitis
The Importance Of Diverse Characters In Children's Literature For Identity Development, Gabrielle Revaitis
English and Creative Writing Independent Study Projects
This paper aims to explore and examine the function of diverse and realistic representation in children's literature and its effect on their identity development. It asserts that literature is one of the main tools by which children develop their understanding of themselves and their place in the world. Reading about various kinds of diversity and realistic representation of different kinds of identities, whether based on race, gender, and disability, helps them to see diversity and commonality in human experiences. However, this paper will also examine how children's literature has been problematic in representing stereotypes and misrepresenting marginalized groups. It emphasizes …

The One-Shot Ceiling: Comparing Rag And Fine-Tuning Architectures For Ai-Assisted Math Mentoring, Michael J. Cummins
The One-Shot Ceiling: Comparing Rag And Fine-Tuning Architectures For Ai-Assisted Math Mentoring, Michael J. Cummins
Computer Science Honors Papers
Providing individualized feedback to math students is a resource-intensive bottleneck in STEM education. We present Mentir-AI, a tool designed to elevate teacher capacity by generating high-quality mathematical feedback using the Mathforum's "Problem of the Week" archive. By analyzing a corpus of nearly one million interactions, we compare the efficacy of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and Fine-Tuning (FT) architectures. This study details the development of an automated grading pipeline, the evolution of a multi-component system prompt, and the implementation of an automated mentor grading system in AI-led evaluation. While Fine-Tuning demonstrates superior instructional judgement, our results identify persistent failure modes in mathematical …

Speaking Of Language: The Relationship Between Language As Capital And Minority Language Education, Alex J. Zelaya
Speaking Of Language: The Relationship Between Language As Capital And Minority Language Education, Alex J. Zelaya
Politics Honors Papers
The future of minority languages not only depends on intergenerational transmission but also on support for immersive instruction in minority languages within the educational system. This paper examines the factors that influence support for minority language education, arguing that language policy is shaped by societal attitudes, which in turn reflect dynamics of power. The paper draws upon Pierre Bourdieu’s conceptualization of different types of capital, including his theory on the relationship between economic, social, cultural and symbolic capital. Within this framework, language functions as a form of capital, reflecting and reinforcing social and economic stratification by conveying status or stigma. …
Why Read In The Age Of Post-Literacy?, Corrine H. Martello
Why Read In The Age Of Post-Literacy?, Corrine H. Martello
Educational Studies Honors Papers
This research paper aims to answer the question, “Why read?” by exploring the significance and purpose of reading, during what many have begun to call the post-literacy era, in order to convey the message that we as human beings have a fundamental need for reading and a failure to fulfill this need may result in an inability to reach one’s full potential as both an individual and as a society at large.

Differences In Gendered Educational Experiences Through A Hegemonic Lens: Cultural Influences On Schooling Norms, Camille M. Hubbs
Educational Studies Honors Papers
Recent research literature has found boys to be failing in school compared to girls; because of this a wave of awareness and furthered research on boys has followed. However, girls’ struggles in education must not be ignored as a result of boys’ issues. This project aims to describe and analyze the differences in educational experiences that both sexes have, and it operates under the understanding that culture is a primary influence on these different experiences. Experiences are divided into three broad sections: academic outcomes, confidence, and behaviors. In short, boys generally have worse academic outcomes, girls have poor confidence, and …
