Leadership And Power In Fostering A Collaborative Community In A Non-Profit Professional Organization, Rod P. Githens

Benerd College Faculty Presentations

Organization development issues among small-scale local professional organizations have rarely been addressed in the adult education human resource development (HRD) literature. In this paper, I provide a first-hand account of an organization development effort in an all-volunteer chapter of an HRD professional organization. This effort grew into an attempt to foster a professional community of practitioners, while examining the power dynamics within the group, specifically the power exercised by myself, as a leader of the group. Due to space constraints, I primarily focus on the self-study aspects of the process of forming the committee and working through issues of leadership …

He Identified With The Lowly And Became A Slave To All: Paul’S Tentmaking As A Strategy For Mission, Joel N. Lohr

Benerd College Faculty Articles

The social background of first-century Christianity has received much attention recently, with many of these studies focusing on the letters from Paul to the Corinthians. Paul's refusal to accept Corinthian financial support is a central concern of these letters. In 1 Corinthians, Paul is adamant concerning this issue, claiming that he would rather die than to accept the Corinthians' pay (9:15). Why does Paul devote an entire section of the letter (chap. 9) to defending his refusal? How should we understand this section within the larger context of the letter? I am principally concerned here with the social reality of …

Critical Action Research In Human Resource Development, Rod P. Githens Jan 2007

Critical Action Research In Human Resource Development, Rod P. Githens

Benerd College Faculty Presentations

Critical approaches to HRD do not focus solely on improving organizational performance; instead, they address previously undiscussable issues such as power, politics, class, alternative work structures, sexism, racism, and heterosexism. As critical HRD often seeks to raise problems instead of immediately solve them, it is sometimes criticized for being elitist or detached from practice. This article addresses how critical approaches to action research can allow practitioners and researchers to integrate critical approaches into actual practice. Critical action research provides a mechanism for ensuring that critical HRD research is grounded in the realities of real-world practice. A model is presented for …

Mastery Learning And The Essentials Of Critical Care Orientation : A Heuristic Participant Evaluation, Mitchell J. Seal

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study employed a heuristic -participant evaluation of the instruction of the web-based Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) program using two research questions: (1) How well does the ECCO adhere to Bloom's theory of mastery learning and instruction; and (2) What effect, if any, does this have on the participant RN? Evaluation findings demonstrated that the ECCO is 66 hours of expository instruction with little to no meaningful feedback, correction, or enrichment activity, is not well aligned, and has significant design flaws related to objectives and transfer of instruction and to the processes of instruction. This results in the …
