The persistence of the ideology of white supremacy requires a deep understanding of race and racism in order to dismantle inequitable systems in the United States. White students in particular do not have the knowledge or tools to understand our racialized society. Education is a powerful means to either interrupt or perpetuate systems of oppression. Not only is it the responsibility of schools to interrupt, but young adolescents are developmentally ready to engage in nuanced and potentially difficult conversations about social identity and justice. This practitioner perspective presents a process in which state-wide initiatives can be used as tools for creating place-based, project-based collaborations between students and local organizations within the community. Vermont is focusing on Content Proficiencies, Transferable Skills, Flexible Pathways and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. CHIP is an effort to combine these initiatives and offer students meaningful school work that provides a real service for, and connects students with, the local community.

An often-overlooked component of a middle school website is the necessity for that website to be accessible to those with disabilities, while following the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Workforce Rehabilitation Act. In support of the belief that support the belief that inclusive education and respect for diversity should be integrated throughout the school, this study investigated the accessibility of middle school websites in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio by selecting a random sample of 150 schools and analyzing their homepages using WAVE (Web Accessibility Versatile Evaluator), which reports accessibility violations by annotating …

This practitioner perspective responds to recent scholarship calling for reinvigorating middle level education by suggesting that the purposeful inclusion of student voices in collaborative learning activities can help educators champion the academic and social growth of early adolescents. The recent practicum experience of a preservice candidate who prioritized the voices of her students illustrates the promotion of democratic education, innovation, and social justice in middle level education.

Good teaching at the middle grades comes out of a deep understanding of the unique cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and moral needs of young adolescents. Therefore specialized preparation is necessary to help teacher candidates understand how to operationalize the intersection of young adolescent development and the effective pedagogy that addresses their needs. This paper focuses on a qualitative study of experienced middle school teachers who graduated from a middle level preparation program or an elementary or secondary preparation program in terms of how well prepared they felt and feel to meet the widely varied needs of young adolescents.
