Three Experiential Learning Activities For The Online Environment, Brian Mesimer, Jenny Chien, Stanley Hoover
Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision
Research indicates that counselor education requires experiential instruction to properly facilitate student engagement (Merlin-Knoblich et al., 2020) Specifically, flipped format classes tend to encourage more student engagement than traditional lecture and online asynchronous courses (Merlin-Knoblich et al., 2020). Such activities should be both varied in nature and include proper exposition and context (Young, 2022). Online programs continue to grow in popularity (Snow et al., 2018). However, transitioning on-ground content online can prove daunting for counselor educators and research on online counselor education teaching strategies is insufficient (Dotson-Blake & Glass, 2016; Hale & Bridges, 2021; Li & Wu, 2021). A Leadership Laboratory: Exploring The Use Of Case-In-Point Pedagogy To Develop Complex Thinking In Leaders, Erica Corley Jackson
Dissertations
Leadership scholars have identified a growing gap between the complexity of 21st century organizations and the capabilities of individuals in positions of leadership to adequately address these challenges. This gap has contributed to a so-called complexity crisis—a situation in which the demands placed on those in leadership positions increases “at a rate that significantly outstrips the rate at which” leaders are cognitively developing (Rich-Tolsma & Oliver, 2016, p. 1). One way to respond to this growing need for complex adult thinking is through metacognitive development initiatives. However, finding educational methods to promote metacognitive development has proven to be …

Immersive Leadership: Creating An Experiential Curriculum To Build Our Students' Leadership, Kimberly Guzman
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
As a higher education professional, I seek to use creative programming to encourage the exploration of alternative learning opportunities and to enhance student success. My action research project explores the process of creating and implementing an immersive leadership experience for students from start to finish. Through a curriculum based on experiential learning and critical reflection, students explored, learned, and developed a social justice lens and leadership skills. Students also reflected on their engagement with leadership in various spaces such as on the University of San Diego’s campus, their home environments, and the Duncan community in Jamaica, where this immersive leadership …

Gender Equity In Outdoor Adventures: How Gender Constructs Shape Engagement At The University Of San Diego, Lauren Wong
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
Outdoor Adventures (OA) at the University of San Diego bridges the industries of outdoor education and higher education. This action research investigates the constructions of gender that inform programming and relationship building within OA. Through a survey and focus groups, I collected data from OA professional staff and student leaders. The purpose of this research was to explore how different genders engage with experiential learning in an outdoor setting through a lens of queer theory, by evaluating the engagement of OA professional staff and participants. My findings indicate that the constructs of gender inform the ways students experience their capacity …

Building A Community Learning Laboratory Through Digital Initiatives, Sonia Chaidez, Stephanie Carmona
Digital Initiatives Symposium
How can digital initiatives help to build a community of life-long learners? It begins with creative collaboration. We developed a partnership between the College Library and the Education Department to launch a learning laboratory that partners adult learners from our neighboring community with our undergraduate students to create authentic learning experiences centered on building digital literacy skills. From photo archives to digital storytelling to creating digital maps- this partnership is helping to build and contribute to digital platforms for the populations that will use them to continue the cycle of life-long teaching and learning. This process also helps to give …
