Overland Trail Game: A Lesson Plan, Alexandria Weber
Overland Trail Game: A Lesson Plan, Alexandria Weber
Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase
Educators of all levels are continuously looking for new ways to engage students with the content. Some post-secondary level instructors have embraced a unique method of role-playing games in their classrooms. Specially, many of these teachers have begun using Mark Carnes's pedagogy of Reacting to the Past. This method gamifies historical content to make it easier for students to relate to a diverse array of historical actors. To play these games, students must achieve a specific goal while pretending to be an assigned historical figure. Reacting to the Past lesson plans are one of a kind, high quality, peer-reviewed teaching …
Implementing Standardized Test Results In The Classroom, Nicole Barthel
Implementing Standardized Test Results In The Classroom, Nicole Barthel
Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase
Students take multiple standardized tests throughout the year, which can have a tremendous impact on the school and students in positive and negative ways. Since this topic is controversial, this study will be exploring both the positive and negative impacts that standardized testing could have on schools and students. The basis of the research will be focusing on two 7th grade students at Valley Middle School in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The study will evaluate and analyze the two student’s progress using various representations obtained from the results of the standardized tests. This data will be used to observe first-hand …

"The seven-level Researcher Skill Development framework extends the RSD's original 5 levels of student autonomy to include the degree of autonomy required for a successful research career. It therefore addresses not only students, but also early, middle and late career researchers. This involves the extension of the same facets of inquiry that appear in the original RSD framework to include two higher levels: 6 and 7." -- https://www.adelaide.edu.au/rsd/framework/rsd7/

Researcher Skill Development Framework (Us English Edition), John Willison, Kerry O'Regan, Sara K. Kuhn
Open Educational Resources
Created by John Willison and Kerry O'Regan.
Adapted for the US context by Sara K. Kuhn.
"Research Skill Development (RSD) is about making explicit and coherent in regular university coursework the incremental attainment of research skills in a specific discipline. In the RSD, there are six facets of the research process, identified from the literature and modified according to Bloom’s taxonomy and our experiences of using the framework in the disciplines. The meaning of ‘research’ in this context is: students actively finding information new to themselves. Underlying this notion is the ‘degree of knowness’ of knowledge: whether research involves …
Improving The Problem With Problem Solving, Cole Thibert
Improving The Problem With Problem Solving, Cole Thibert
Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase
As a prospective math educator who will be teaching in the near future, I was concerned with the idea of preparing my future students for college math courses. I decided to research the effects of teaching students how to appropriately use problem solving strategies in math. My research led me towards looking at the benefits of students becoming better problem solvers and how teachers can implement problem solving into their daily lessons.
When this implementation is successful, students can become more independent with their learning, they are able to work and persevere through challenging problems, and they have a greater …

Leveraging Cross-Campus Collaborations To Promote Financial Literacy, Holly Gabriel, Dawn Hackman, Renee Nilsen
Librarian Posters and Presentations
Financial literacy is increasingly important for all college students, but none more so than students in professional health or medical programs. Many of them are in uncharted territory, facing new and unique financial decisions and obligations that accompany these costly degrees, such as lengthy unpaid internships and expensive certification processes. Academic librarians are well situated to be able to meet these needs, not by teaching financial literacy themselves, but by connecting the students with subject experts. This has been done at the University of North Dakota through a partnership between campus librarians and UND’s Financial Wellness office. For example, the …
