Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of new-century student engagement held by public middle school math educators who used an asset-based pedagogy. This study was guided by one research question: How do public middle school math educators describe new-century student engagement in their middle school math classroom when an asset-based pedagogy is in place? The scholarly research important to this study included concepts related to culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP; Ladson-Billings, 1995; Paris & Alim, 2017) and culturally responsive classroom management (CRCM; Gay & Howard, 2000). The theoretical framework was culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP; Paris …

(En)Countering White Noise: A Narrative Study Of How Students Of Color Experience And Navigate Rural, Predominantly White High Schools, Nichole Theresa Ivey

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

The omission of students’ of Color experiences from education research reconstitutes political and social narratives that determine who belongs in literal and symbolic spatial contexts in the United States. Meanwhile, racial opportunity gaps emerge in the schoolhouse and endure over the course of the lifespan because educational attainment is a catalyst for economic mobility and other positive life outcomes. The problem addressed in this study was the dearth of research exploring the experiences of students of Color who attend rural, predominantly White high schools. Using narrative inquiry, the aim of this study was to disrupt normative White perspectives (individual and …

Implicit Bias And Least Restrictive Environment: Perceptions Of Certified Educators, Christen Papallo Jul 2024

Implicit Bias And Least Restrictive Environment: Perceptions Of Certified Educators, Christen Papallo

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

This narrative inquiry study explored the lived experiences of Connecticut’s certified educators related to implicit bias and student placement. The theory of intersectionality suggests that implicit bias is present within all individuals (Crenshaw, 2017). Thus, there is a natural propensity for implicit bias, specific to ability, among school personnel. The problem to be addressed is the need for a greater understanding of how the natural existence

of implicit bias among certified educators impacts their view of student capabilities and

achievement, thus impacting placement decisions in the classroom. Eight participants completed individual, semi-structured interviews, which were transcribed, re-storied and member checked. …

Teachers’ Experiences And Perceptions Of Equity-Oriented Practices In K-5 Literacy Instruction, Carla J. Reyes-Crocker Mrs. Jun 2024

Teachers’ Experiences And Perceptions Of Equity-Oriented Practices In K-5 Literacy Instruction, Carla J. Reyes-Crocker Mrs.

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

The Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) included requirements and supports to advance equity and excellence for all students, including those historically underserved in education. However, data available from the Maine Department of Education (2021) signaled an evident achievement gap. The Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) required equity strategies and evidence-based interventions to improve and encourage schools, educators, and leaders to determine which data-driven approaches best meet school and student needs. Effective equity-oriented practices in the literacy classroom included group work, centering student voice, student-centered instruction, and implementing grade-level materials (Lazar, 2022; Williamson, 2017). Still, little information was available exploring the …

Exploring The Perspectives Of Private High School Students With Adverse Childhood Experiences On Trauma-Based Approaches, Jay Aldrin A. Locquiao

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

Nearly 75% of high school students reported having at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE) (Anderson et al., 2022). The effects of trauma include hindrances to skill acquisition and task completion because of how one’s executive functioning is inhibited (Cohen & Barron, 2021; Hubel et al., 2020; McClain, 2021). Students with trauma may experience “emotional, relational, behavioral and cognitive levels that will significantly impair their psychosocial functioning” (Milot et al., 2010, p. 232). This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach to capture the essence of the lived experiences of the participants (Creswell & Poth, 2017). The purpose of this study …

ABSTRACT

This narrative inquiry explored how educational leaders perceive the development of a trauma-informed school. A trauma-informed school acknowledges the impact of trauma and responds by integrating effective practices, programs, and procedures to build resilience. Further, this qualitative study fills the gap in literature by providing the lived experiences of educational leaders in developing trauma-informed schools. Through narrative research, semistructured interviews which lasted up to 60 minutes were individually conducted with five educational leaders who …

Urban Elementary Teachers’ Experiences In Maine Managing The Paradoxical Tension To Both Deliver Grade-Level Instruction And Customize Support: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study, Laura Graves

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

ABSTRACT

To address historic levels of students’ unfinished learning, teachers must balance two competing objectives: maintaining grade-level instruction so that students do not fall further behind, while simultaneously customizing support so that students can rise to grade-level. This complex instruction is particularly important for teachers serving students from communities under pressure who were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and historic barriers to education. The problem addressed in this study was the lack of understanding of urban elementary teachers’ experiences as they managed the paradoxical tension to deliver grade-level instruction to the entire class while customizing support according to individual …
