It’s great to be a former English teacher working in the world of technology — although it hasn’t always been pretty. When I first started working in technology (in the late 1980s), techies greeted me with wary disdain. I didn’t know the lingo, I didn’t live to be the first to know about the next hardware release, and my idea of a good time on Saturday night was to spend time with a warm, breathing being, not a keyboard and a screen. Why do I even look for teaching ideas in the education catalogs that fill my mailbox? I know that these offerings of prefabricated units and generic novel activities will not satisfy the desires of my students. The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes and practices of school board presidents in Nebraska pertaining to Internet use policy-making and its implications on health education. This study utilized a mailed written survey. The data indicated that public school policy makers have significantly different perceptions of health education than of specific selected health education components, i.e., they are not very concerned about access to Internet health education information in general, but they are very concerned about specific areas of health education. Specifically, board presidents were most concerned about access to information about Internet sexuality followed by drug …

A Comparison Of Interaction In Av-Based And Internet-Based Distance Courses, Melodee Landis

At the center of the debate over the viability of distance education is whether the newer electronic technologies can offer enough interaction to maintain quality learner outcomes and critical mass. Two of the most commonly used forms of distance education are 1) two-way, fully interactive audio-video classrooms and 2) on-line instruction through the Internet or Worldwide Web. This study used qualitative methods to compare and contrast the interaction that occurred in distance learning courses offered via each medium. The research process confirmed findings that there were fundamental differences in the interaction that occurred in the two environments. On-line interaction is …
