This study proposed that the level of self-awareness possessed by a leader has a direct relationship with the engagement level of the team he or she leads. A quantitative approach using the results of self-other leadership ratings and team engagement ratings were examined to explain employee engagement through perceptions of leadership awareness.

By understanding leadership through the integration of two instruments, one designed to measure seven specific demands of leadership (the L7 instrument) and another to measure employee engagement on twelve dimensions (the Q12 instrument), this study explored the relationship between leader self-awareness and the effect of that awareness on …

The purpose of this study was to examine the lived field orientation experiences of 12 missionaries living in Kenya and Tanzania relative to their perceptions of personal effectiveness. This study was driven by how a segment of missionaries described their field orientation in relation to perceived effectiveness on the field. Four major themes relative to field orientation emerged. Recommendations relating to missionary field orientation programs were offered.

Postsecondary educational institutions of all types have seen increases in the number of enrollees diagnosed with ADHD. Despite such increases less in known about ADHD among college students because the majority of research has focused on children and adolescents. This qualitative study conducted in the tradition of phenomenology, explored the lived experiences of ten students attending a community college. In 2009, a replication of the Pool study was conducted. This study, however, focused on the school systems classified as Class III districts. Nebraska has 252 Class III districts. Compared with Class II (21), Class IV (1), and Class V(1) districts, the Class III districts offer a wide array of school settings, from urban to extremely rural, and from the third largest school system in Nebraska to a single school district occupying a county in the western sandhills.

It is well documented that there is a worldwide epidemic of obesity in children. To address obesity in children, emphasis must be on factors within family, school, and community environments. Although most parents and school officials are aware of the problem of overweight children, there is little data available to guide decision making about the acceptability of school-based Body Mass Index (BMI) screening and referral programs. As states mandate BMI screening and referral, parental insight is essential to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of BMI notification.

Developmental Asset Building In At-Risk Youth: A Mixed Methods Study, Kraig James Lofquist

The purpose of this mixed methods triangulation design study was to explore how “service learning” affects “at-risk” student’s overall level of Developmental Assets. Quantitative data were obtained by using a pre and post assessment. Specifically, the Developmental Asset Profile (DAP) was used to determine if “service learning” opportunities increased the overall levels of developmental assets experienced by the atrisk student group. Additionally, qualitative data were gained by interviewing service learning participants to supplement the quantitative data collected in the Developmental Asset Profile.

This quantitative study used factorial design and survey research to examine the influence of departmental affiliation and pedagogical training on full-time faculty members’ (n = 2193) working in the Technical College System of Georgia. The tool for data collections was a web-survey instrument, modified with permission from the Faculty Survey on Teaching, Learning and Assessment” (Matney, 2001).

Two independent variables (departmental affiliation and level of pedagogical training in active learning practices) and three dependent variables (participation in the scholarship of teaching and learning, introduction of new teaching techniques, and active learning practices) were measured by responses on a 5-point Likert-scale. …

This qualitative, multiple case study explored what women working in student affairs reported as influences on their career choices and the impact that the type and level of student interaction has on their careers.

Data from semi-structured interviews and journal entries were obtained from ten women working in student affairs at private, four-year institutions of higher education in the Midwest. The “Stage Model of the Careers of Successful Women” (White, Cox, & Cooper, 1992) provided the theoretical framework and the basis for selecting women for the study. A book title attracted my attention as I rummaged through a new, offbeat bookstore. The book, Writing to Change the World, is written by the author of Reviving Ophelia, Mary Pipher. For those who have embraced the dis- cussion of social justice issues at recent academic conferences, the book of- fers the perspective of an author who has written extensively and successfully about social justice issues.

Two days in San Diego were a memorable learning opportunity for me. On a Thursday, my daughter Elizabeth and I stood and watched about 579 young men run around a parade field at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. We were treated to the same individuals marching around the parade field in their spiffy uniforms. Later, we had some audience rehearsal of how to respond to a variety of orders. This was a particularly useful set of drills since the group needed extensive practice in screaming, volume enhance- ment, and understanding what the orders were. Opinions Of Female Juvenile Delinquents On Language-Based Literacy Activities, Dixie Sanger, Mitzi Ritzman, Aliza Stremlau, Lindsey Fairchild, Cindy Brunken

A mixed methods study was conducted to examine female juvenile delinquents' opinions and reactions on nine language-based literacy activities. Forty-one participants ranging in age from 13 to 18 years responded to a survey consisting of nine multiple-choice items and one open-ended question concerning the use- fulness of activities. Quantitative and qualitative findings revealed the majority of participants found the activities to be very useful. From 410 comments, five key themes emerged on positive opinions about usefulness, personal examples of use, negative opinions about usefulness, metacognitive and self regulation skills, and predictions of usefulness with future students. This biographical study features the leadership of Joan Miller Wint, now re- tired, who for 23 years was principal of Denbigh High School, located in a high-poverty rural area in Jamaica. In the article I examine biography as a qualitative research strategy used in "telling" the stories of women leaders; explore the influence of Wint's early life and education on her leadership; highlight the challenges Wint encountered as a principal, as well as how she transformed the school from low-performing to high-performing; and dis- cuss Wint's story in terms of the themes in the scholarship on women's leadership.

September 15, 2009, was the deadline for submitting climate action plans for the charter signatories of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. The reports on the site provide a reality check on sustainability efforts within higher education. The proposed climate-neutral dates confirm that this endeavor may be more challenging than some institutions initially realized. In many cases, the reports show that IT is not a major partner in campus sustainability planning; however, some notable exceptions do stand out.

Global food production has outpaced population growth since 1960, but meeting growing demand for food and water in the future will be challenging. "There is an intimate link between food and water," said David Molden, deputy director general for research at the International Water Management Institute and an internationally known expert on water management. In his public lecture, "Will there be Enough Water to Grow Enough Food?" Aug. 27 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Molden said the answer to this critical question is "no, unless we change the way we think and act on water issues."

Perceptions Of Leadership Behaviors By Female Principals In North Caroline, Cheryl Mcfadden, Cathy Maahs-Fladung, Susan Beck-Frazier, Kermit Bruckner

This study was designed to investigate whether significant differences exist among the perceptions of leadership behaviors of female principals in North Carolina using Bolman and Deal's (1984) four frames (structural, human re- source, political, and symbolic) for analysis. Participants consisted of 1,245 fe- male principals from elementary, middle, and secondary public schools in North Carolina. The researchers collected 525 responses for a 53% response rate. Overall, female principals in North Carolina perceive that they use multiple frame perspectives in their leadership behaviors. The authors of these two books had similar motivations for their research and subse- quent publications. Their research methodologies were similar in that both works are based on qualitative studies of women college and university presidents. The analysis and synthesis ofthe information gleaned from the studies, and the presentation of that information, differ in ways that make for interesting comparisons.

This article focuses on the development and validation of the Ethical Leadership Index (ELI). The development and validation processes included: adopting a framework; developing items; providing evidence of content validity; conduct- ing a pilot study; and analyzing data to provide evidence of construct validity and reliability estimates. Five ethical principles that are mentioned in leadership models, theories, and approaches served as the framework for the ELI. They in- clude respect for autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, and fidelity. Women face unique challenges as superintendents. This study determined barri- ers women face as superintendents and elicited reasons why these women would consider leaving the superintendent's position. Thirty-nine PreK-12 women su- perintendents in Illinois participated in a web-based survey in January 2008. Survey items included information regarding characteristics, pathways to the superintendency, personal barriers, professional barriers, and factors that would cause women to consider leaving the superintendency. Respondents identified familial responsibilities, gender discrimination, employment opportunities, and self-confidence as major barriers. Factors that would cause women superinten- dents to leave their position included employment opportunities, familial re- sponsibilities, and peer support. …

This is an analysis of equity in Iowa educational leadership from the 1978-1979 school year through 2007-2008, and the extent to which rapidly changing stu- dent racial demographics are reflected in the schools. We found that male princi- pals continue to outnumber women 6: 1 in rural districts, but in urban schools the rate is closer to 1: 1. Female superintendents are now paid statistically the same as men, but women in every other educational position make on average less money than men. Colleges and universities are dealing with revenue shortfalls, massive budget cuts, layoffs, furloughs, underwater endowments, underfunded pension plans, enrollment sags, and credit access problems. Some administrators are saying, “We need to put sustainability projects on hold until we work our way through more basic survival problems.” Is this a valid perspective, or an excuse for inaction? Actually, energy-saving retrofit projects are still fundable, even in today’s credit market, if projected costs and benefits are based on an “investment grade” analysis.
