The university course that I teach addresses information literacy and metaliteracy, derived from both the Association of College & Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and metaliteracy's roles (https://metaliteracy.org/ml-in-practice/metaliterate-learner-roles/) and learning domains, respectively. The course uses Wikipedia editing to bring home a number of important concepts and practices to students, These include the frames Information Has Value (in particular, we consider gender issues connected to Wikipedia editing and content), Searching as Strategic Exploration, and Information Creation as a Process. The metacognitive and affective learning domains are highlighted, and two metaliteracy themes, Engage with Intellectual Property …

Textbooks are often the primary reference when we think of open educational resources (OER). While these textbooks are important and offer obvious economic benefits to students, the range of OER is wide and growing. In this paper, we introduce a specific set of OER, under the rubric of the metaliteracy framework, designed to strengthen critical thinking and the overall learning capacities of students. We describe a successful collaboration between an instructor of a political science course and a librarian, which employed these resources to enhance the overall student experience and to focus student attention on becoming more active contributors to …
Creating Shareable Knowledge: Exploring The Synergy Between Metaliteracy And Open Pedagogy, Trudi E. Jacobson
Creating Shareable Knowledge: Exploring The Synergy Between Metaliteracy And Open Pedagogy, Trudi E. Jacobson
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
Open educational resources (OERs) have created conditions for a transformational change in teaching and learning. New models and frameworks provide the basis for innovative, learner-centered pedagogical practices. Open pedagogy, which builds upon the use of OERs and open educational practices, envisages learners as knowledge creators. Metaliteracy proposes a number of active, reflective learner roles, with a particular emphasis on online, participatory environments. Learners who find themselves in open pedagogical situations may feel anxiety and uncertainty concerning the unaccustomed environment and expectations placed upon them. Metaliteracy provides a comprehensive scaffolding and flexible framework for the learning required in such settings, a …

Developing Metaliterate Citizens: Designing And Delivering Enhanced Global Learning Opportunities, Trudi E. Jacobson, Thomas P. Mackey, Kelsey L. O'Brien
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
Metaliteracy, originally developed in 2010 as a response to a then-limited conception of information literacy, provides a pedagogical model for thinking and knowing in a social media age that has allowed for the proliferation of false and misleading information. It is vital that individuals be thoughtful and critical consumers of information, and also responsible and ethical information creators and sharers. Metaliterate learners are developed across academic disciplines through teaching and learning that support self-direction, collaboration, participation, and metacognitive thinking. The creation of innovative, collaborative, and open online learning environments that apply the metaliteracy goals and learning objectives is imperative for …

A Critical Review Of Research On Student Self-Assessment, Heidi Andrade
A Critical Review Of Research On Student Self-Assessment, Heidi Andrade
Educational & Counseling Psychology Faculty Scholarship
This article is a review of research on student self-assessment conducted largely between 2013 and 2018. The purpose of the review is to provide an updated overview of theory and research. The treatment of theory involves articulating a refined definition and operationalization of self-assessment. The review of 76 empirical studies offers a critical perspective on what has been investigated, including the relationship between self-assessment and achievement, consistency of self-assessment and others’ assessments, student perceptions of self-assessment, and the association between self-assessment and self-regulated learning. An argument is made for less research on consistency and summative self-assessment, and more on the …

Building Will And Capacity For Improvement In A Rural Research-Practice Partnership, Kristen Campbell Wilcox, Sarah J. Zuckerman
Educational Policy & Leadership Faculty Scholarship
This study addresses two questions: (1) In what ways and to what extent does a research-practice partnership (RPP) using improvement-science (IS) based processes and tools impact educators’ will and capacity to engage in improvement efforts? and (2) What effect does this RPP have on targeted student outcomes? The RPP highlighted in this research was comprised of university researchers, professional developers, and elementary and junior-senior high school improvement teams including school leaders, teachers, and support staff in the two component schools of a rural district. The study provides evidence that the RPP helped build a district-wide commitment to continuous improvement processes …

Can Education Reduce Political Polarization?: Fostering Open-Minded Political Engagement During The Legislative Semester, Brett L.M. Levy, Annaly Babb-Guerra, Wolf Owczarek, Lena M. Batt
Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship
Background: In the United States, elected leaders and the general public have become more politically polarized during the past several decades, making bipartisan compromise difficult. Political scientists and educational scholars have argued that generating productive political cooperation requires preparing members of democratic societies to productively negotiate their political disagreements. Numerous prior studies on civic learning have focused on fostering youth political engagement, but little research has examined how educators can support both political engagement and political open-mindedness.
Purpose: The study described in this paper explores how students’ experiences in a unique high school government course may help to foster their …
Motivating Political Participation Among Youth: An Analysis Of Factors Related To Adolescents’ Political Engagement, Brett Levy, Thomas Akiva
Motivating Political Participation Among Youth: An Analysis Of Factors Related To Adolescents’ Political Engagement, Brett Levy, Thomas Akiva
Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship
Prior research has identified political efficacy and political interest as strong predictors of political participation, but few studies have examined these two attitudes in tandem or compared their relative importance vis-à-vis political participation. Drawing on the expectancy-value model of motivation, we begin to address this research gap while also considering several related issues. Our sample includes a diverse group of high school students in grades 10, 11, and 12 (N=422) from the midwestern United States. Through quantitative analyses of participants’ survey data, we found that political interest (a central aspect of value) and political efficacy (closely related to expectancy) predicted …
Coming Out Online And On Campus : Queer Perspectives On Identity Work, Ian Callahan
Coming Out Online And On Campus : Queer Perspectives On Identity Work, Ian Callahan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This research aims to describe the experiences associated with coming out—both on campus and online—for sexually and gender nonconforming college students. In 2014, I conducted a pilot version of this study at a public American university in the Northeast, utilizing data from semi- structured in-depth interviews and a demographic questionnaire. A thematic analysis using open and axial coding techniques found that social media interactions contributed to ‘outing’ students on campus. This finding inspired a second iteration of the study, which replicates the original research design and expands its interview script to include a more expansive series of questions related to …

Background: Senses of Birth (SoB) is a health education intervention in Brazil that addresses reproductive rights, the benefits and risks of normal birth and cesarean, and use of evidence-based practices (EBP) during labor and childbirth, aiming to reduce unnecessary cesareans in the country. This mixed-method study had three objectives: 1) evaluate the impact of the SoB intervention on pregnant women’s perceived knowledge about normal birth, cesarean, and use of EBP in childbirth; 2) identify socio-demographic factors, obstetric characteristics, and aspects of women’s perceived knowledge that influence women’s use of EBP; and 3) analyze the outcomes, barriers and facilitators/strategies to use …
Understanding Hazing Perceptions Of Students And Administrators Using A Four Frame Approach, Emily Feuer
Understanding Hazing Perceptions Of Students And Administrators Using A Four Frame Approach, Emily Feuer
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Hazing poses a health and safety risk to many students and campuses in the United States, including students involved in fraternities/sororities. To combat hazing, college campuses have put structures and policies in place in an attempt to better govern, control, or reduce fraternity/sorority activities, but hazing incidents continue to persist. This study examines how students affiliated with fraternities/sororities and administrators who work with these students frame hazing behavior with the intention of creating a foundation for interventions based on common findings and potential gaps in frame utilization.
The Impact Of Principal Leadership On Teacher Perception Of The Annual Professional Performance Review (Appr), Barry Alexander Finsel
The Impact Of Principal Leadership On Teacher Perception Of The Annual Professional Performance Review (Appr), Barry Alexander Finsel
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Teacher quality is the most important school-based factor affecting student learning and achievement. In 2009, the Race to the Top (RttT) federal education initiative provided an opportunity for states to compete for federal grant resources to reform their public education systems, which included revamping teacher evaluation systems to improve teacher (and principal) effectiveness. Consequently, New York State was awarded almost $700 million in 2010 during the second phase of RttT for its Regents Education Reform Plan, which established a new teacher and principal evaluation plan known as the Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR). Under its first version (§3012-c), APPR used …

Transformative Technology For English Language Learners, Lashonda K. Gardenhire
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Across the United States, communities are becoming more linguistically and culturally diverse. Throughout previous times of change, schools have been the bedrock of transforming society and it’s workers. However, if education in the United States is ever going to level the playing field between the affluent and the poor, white students and minority students, native-born and foreign-born, it will not be enough for English Language Learners to simply learn to read and write in English. Educators must reflect on how to adapt their teaching practices for a plethora of student needs. Subsequently, the focus of this paper will specifically be …
Amae And Japanese Learners Of English : Their Strategies To Deal With Problems In Understanding In Conversations With Native And Non-Native Speakers, Emiko Kamiya
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of the study is to investigate how amae may affect Japanese learners of English when they are exposed to intercultural communication, so that educators can take advantage of the study’s findings to improve English education in Japan. Amae is a concept that a Japanese psychiatrist Takeo Doi introduced as a key to understanding the psychology of Japanese people. It is roughly translated as “dependence” but actually refers to a psychological disposition that is observed in specific patterns of behavior. Although the concept is frequently mentioned in studies of Japanese culture and society, not much is known about how …

Anxiety Among Women Living With Hiv In Kazakhstan, Kathryn Emily Mishkin
Anxiety Among Women Living With Hiv In Kazakhstan, Kathryn Emily Mishkin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Research shows that mental illness has an impact on the health and quality of life of women living with HIV. As a result, many countries have adopted integrated care models to provide holistic treatment to women living with HIV. However, some countries, where the HIV burden is particularly high, have been ineffective at addressing the mental health needs of these women, primarily because of a compartmentalized health care structure that limits interaction among sectors. By describing the prevalence of anxiety and comorbid anxiety-depression among women living with HIV in affected areas, there is an opportunity for effective policies to be …
Undergraduate Engineering Students' Agency In Professional Socialization : Evidence From A Capstone Design Lab, Michelle Mora
Undergraduate Engineering Students' Agency In Professional Socialization : Evidence From A Capstone Design Lab, Michelle Mora
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Two national priorities were instrumental in this study of an undergraduate engineering program: (1) Higher education’s roles and responsibilities for the preparation of a workforce competent in science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and (2) Accountability-related questions regarding the value-added effects of professional education programs on aspiring STEM students. A recent report suggests that policy makers and the public do not know whether current initiatives are accomplishing their goals and leading to nationwide improvements in undergraduate STEM education (Committee on Developing Indicators for Undergraduate STEM Education et al., 2018). One reason is that national, state, and institutional undergraduate data systems often …

A Comparison Of Three Tablet-Based Sight Word Flashcard Interventions, Brandon Paul Sinisi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of the present study was to compare the efficiency of three tablet-based flashcard sight word interventions with varying ratios of known to unknown material that have historically been administered in paper-based form. To control for level of intervention duration, which tends to vary due to the presence of different amounts of known items across the conditions, the OTR for each flashcard procedure across intervention sessions were fixed. Additionally, this study investigated four specific outcome variables for each intervention: (a) the rate of learning new sight words (i.e., acquisition per minute of instruction), (b) skill maintenance of learned sight …
Reflective Structuration Of Knowledge Building Practices In Grade 5 Science Classrooms, Dan Tao
Reflective Structuration Of Knowledge Building Practices In Grade 5 Science Classrooms, Dan Tao
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Recent reforms in science education call for efforts to engage students in authentic and sustained science practices. In order to engage students in authentic science practices, students need to enact epistemic agency over the processes of inquiry in line with how knowledge is constructed and practiced in the real world. A critical research challenge is to understand how student agency-driven science practices can be socially organized and pedagogically supported over time without pre-defined tasks and procedures from the teacher in classrooms. Situated in the context of Knowledge Building pedagogy, this dissertation contributes to a reflective structuration approach of science practices …

Learning A New Physics Concept By Exploring Analogous Problems : An Instructional Intervention, Joanna Perry Weaver
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study tested the hypothesis that exploratory learning, with and without analogous problems, would improve students’ ability to make connections between conceptually-related topics. In this randomized experiment, undergraduates in introductory physics (N = 171) studied a new topic under three different instructional conditions. Order and type of instruction varied: Two experimental groups explored the concept before hearing a lecture; a control group followed the typical sequence of hearing a lecture before working with the concept. Within the experimental condition, students in the analogy-first group simultaneously explored analogous problems; students in the explore-first group explored only the new problem with a …
