What Student And School Factors Increase Disadvantages In Special Needs Students? An Investigation Of Student Learning Growth In Students With Ieps, Julia Burdulis
Senior Theses and Projects
This study used public-use data from the National Center for Education Statistics’s (NCES) Early Childhood Longitudinal Program, Kindergarten Class of 2011 (ECLS-K: 2011) to examine math and reading learning growth from 4th to 5th grade among student with and without Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). When comparing the non-IEP student sample to the IEP student sample, a disproportionate number of minority students and students of low socioeconomic status were observed in the IEP student group. Among non-IEP students, significantly decreased score growth was predicted in students who were Black, Hispanic, had less highly educated parents, were from a low income household, …
Navigating Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: The Jumpstart Hartford Model, Mabel Silva
Navigating Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: The Jumpstart Hartford Model, Mabel Silva
Senior Theses and Projects
Culturally responsive pedagogy attempts to dismantle the racist structures that uphold the educational system. It acknowledges that the experiences, cultures, and traditions of marginalized communities are often missing from schooling, and tries to incorporate them by altering curriculum and day-to-day classroom practices (Ladson-Billings, 1995). However, little research has examined whether and how teachers of color utilize culturally relevant pedagogy. Jumpstart is a national program that seeks to equalize educational opportunity in pre-kindergarten by providing language and literacy services as well as social and emotional development (Jumpstart, 2019). I, therefore, posited the following research questions: How does Jumpstart Hartford utilize culturally …
Thriving Or Surviving?: Socioeconomic Status And On-Campus Experiences Of Second-Year Trinity College Students Of Color, Graciela Valencia
Thriving Or Surviving?: Socioeconomic Status And On-Campus Experiences Of Second-Year Trinity College Students Of Color, Graciela Valencia
Senior Theses and Projects
College campuses have increased their cultural diversity and increased financial aid packages in efforts of becoming more inclusive of race and class. While such efforts have allowed more people of color and the low and working class to use institutions of higher education as a form of social mobility, this does not necessarily mean college environments have truly become inclusive. This study was conducted at Trinity College, an elite, predominantly white institution with the goal of answering how socioeconomic status conditions the experiences of second year students of color. This research was based on eight semi-structured, qualitative interviews with second …
Community College Student-Parents: Experience, Persistence, And Outcomes, Emily Schroeder
Community College Student-Parents: Experience, Persistence, And Outcomes, Emily Schroeder
Senior Theses and Projects
Adults who occupy both the role of student and parent represent over twenty percent of the American undergraduate population. Unfortunately, little research exists about the experience’s student-parents have balancing their dual responsibilities and the challenges they face while enrolled in post-secondary education. Thus in partnership with the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance and Capital Community College, we endeavored to answer the questions of what differences exist between the experiences of community college parent and non-parent students in regard to their attendance, persistence, and outcomes in community college, as well as how student-parents navigate their long-term educational goals versus the immediate responsibilities …
Connecticut Pre-K Policy, Parental Choice, And The Trinity College Community Child Center, Manny Rodriguez
Connecticut Pre-K Policy, Parental Choice, And The Trinity College Community Child Center, Manny Rodriguez
Senior Theses and Projects
Traditional public schools in Connecticut have been pushed out by newer options since the landmark Sheff vs. O’Neill decision, which called for the development of magnet schools. The influx of magnet schools to Connecticut has caused traditional preschools like the Trinity College Community Child Center (TC4) to experience more competition and lose potential enrollees and revenue. For this project, I sought to discover how the growth of magnet pre-k programs has influenced how families choose schools for their 3-to-5-year-old children. I analyzed data from the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood, the Connecticut State Department of Education and conducted 10 semi-structured …
Trinity Return-To-Learn Post-Concussion Protocol Assessment, Anna Hackett
Trinity Return-To-Learn Post-Concussion Protocol Assessment, Anna Hackett
Senior Theses and Projects
Return-to-learn protocols after concussion have received less attention than return-to-play protocols. Return-to-learn protocols are step by step guidelines for students and teachers to help ease concussed students back into their academic work. At Trinity College, faculty are given information on common effects of concussion and suggested academic accommodations. This study aimed to assess the entire return-to-learn protocol currently in place at Trinity College, with a specific focus on how well known the program is to students and how helpful they have found it, in an attempt to ascertain what aspects of the protocol work well and what could be improved. …

“Binge-drinking” cannot simply be recognized as a feature of campus culture, but as the product of a profoundly alienating one, made strikingly evident by our creation of a separate world (“drunk world”). We have created a small world of impossible possibles that exists in the corners of the actual; a separate world, in which the imagining of the self, other, and the world, is not only permissible but promoted. At the heart of college students’ “partying hard” is a longing, hope, and dogged determination that the liberating and unifying aspects of this world can overwhelm the actual...and in the meantime …
