Examining Community-Based Esol Teachers’ And Tutors’ Conceptualization Of Culturally Responsive Teaching, Lynne S. Von Glahn May 2024

Examining Community-Based Esol Teachers’ And Tutors’ Conceptualization Of Culturally Responsive Teaching, Lynne S. Von Glahn

Doctoral Dissertations

Community-based organizations offer English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) support to community members due to a severe shortage of trained and certified Teaching English Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) teachers (Sutcher et al., 2019). Many of these organizations rely on volunteers to teach and tutor students enrolled in the programs they offer. Volunteers play an invaluable role in providing ESOL support and instruction, but many lack the necessary preparation and training (Henrichsen, 2010). Untrained and unprepared volunteers can ultimately result in cultural mismatches and ineffective instruction, adversely affecting learners (Durham & Kim, 2019). Training in culturally responsive teaching strategies can …

Curriculum Development In Human Rights Education: Teacher Candidates And Faculty Members’ Views, Faramarz Yaşar Abedi, Seval Fer Apr 2024

Curriculum Development In Human Rights Education: Teacher Candidates And Faculty Members’ Views, Faramarz Yaşar Abedi, Seval Fer

International Journal of Human Rights Education

Human Rights Education (HRE) is believed to be crucial in teacher education as it equips teacher candidates (TCs) with the knowledge, skills, values, and behaviors to contribute to the establishment of a human rights culture. However, there is little evidence of HRE curriculum development in Turkish Teacher Education Programs (TTEP). Unfortunately, HRE is not specifically mentioned as a distinct subject or area of study in TTEP. This convergent mixed methods research (MMR) study aimed to understand TCs and Faculty Members' (FMs) views on identifying HRE curriculum components in TTEP. The study merged quantitative survey and qualitative interview data to provide …

Evaluating The Past And Charting The Future Of Human Rights Education, J. Paul Martin, Snigdha Dutt Apr 2023

Evaluating The Past And Charting The Future Of Human Rights Education, J. Paul Martin, Snigdha Dutt

International Journal of Human Rights Education

This article provides an overview of the field of human rights education (HRE) using an input/output schema. It examines the challenges encountered at the delivery points where instructors must contextualize the now extensive corpus of human rights documents and practices to meet the needs, and the political and cultural traditions, of their particular target population. The challenges also point to the dominance of prescriptive over evaluative HRE literature, the degree to which HRE is not a stand-alone activity and the limited HRE-specific teacher training. The authors therefore call for more research on the long-term HRE outcomes of human rights education …

Long-Term Effects Of Teacher Training And Other Intervening Factors On Teaching Styles Of Foreign-Language Instructors, Hamid Mohammed-Ahmed

Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigated the long-term effects of a learner-centered-oriented-teacher training on teaching styles of foreign-language instructors at a multilanguage institute to assess the relationship between the training and the teaching practice. A mixed-method design was employed, and the data were collected from 165 participants who took the Principles of Adult Learning Style (Conti, 1978, 2004) and who provided their written reflections on the training, in addition to follow-up interviews with 12 language instructors. Results of one-sample t tests showed statistically significant differences between the teaching styles of language instructors at the institute and the general population of adult educators indicating …

Developing Intercultural Competence Through Online English Language Teaching, Didem Ekici Dec 2018

Developing Intercultural Competence Through Online English Language Teaching, Didem Ekici

Doctoral Dissertations

With an increasing number of refugees and immigrants in European and American classrooms, teachers need to be prepared to meet their varied and complex needs. In particular, to help these diverse students succeed, teachers need to be interculturally competent, which is a combination of many skills including attitude, linguistic and cultural awareness, empathy, and flexibility. However, developing these skills not only takes theoretical knowledge but also hands-on training and practice. While many programs in school of education provide experiential practicum projects and online collaborations with diverse students, they have not expanded to the population in war zones. Moreover, a review …

Practical Pragmatics: A Workshop To Learn Strategies For Teaching Pragmatic Awareness To Adult English Language Leaners, Sara G. Ziogas May 2017

Practical Pragmatics: A Workshop To Learn Strategies For Teaching Pragmatic Awareness To Adult English Language Leaners, Sara G. Ziogas

Master's Projects and Capstones

The lack of teacher training and textbook teaching materials for developing pragmatic awareness in ESL (English as a second language) and EFL (English as a foreign language) classrooms has led to a gap in the development of students’ communicative competence in English as a second or foreign language. The purpose of this project is to provide an opportunity for teachers, who may be unaware of how to recognize their own first language pragmatic competence, to learn how to reverse-engineer their innate knowledge and then use those strategies to create practical, teachable lessons for their students to gain pragmatic awareness in …

Challenging, Eye-Opening, And Changing U.S. Teacher Training In Korea: Creating Experiences That Will Enhance Global Perspectives, Kevin Oh, Natalie Nussli

School of Education Faculty Research

This case study explored the short-term international experience of preservice teachers to create and enhance global perspectives. These teachers (n=5), all female graduate students at a university in the U.S., were fully immersed in a foreign culture for three weeks while teaching English to primary and secondary students in Korea. Pre-, during-, and post-data were collected to investigate how the participants work and live while being completely immersed in a new culture. Eight themes emerged from the analysis of multiple qualitative instruments: (a) language barrier, (b) being the minority, (c) cultural differences and cultural shock, (d) student participation and teaching …

Teacher Training In The Use Of A Three-Dimensional Immersive Virtual World: Building Understanding Through First-Hand Experiences, Kevin Oh, Natalie Nussli

School of Education Faculty Research

This study offers recommendations and a model for other teacher educators who are interested in training teachers in the use of three-dimensional (3D) immersive virtual worlds (IVWs) for their own teaching. Twelve special education teachers collaboratively explored the usability of Second Life (SL) for special education by completing a full inquiry cycle to develop the ability to make informed decisions about the affordances and challenges of virtual world teaching and to help identify effective components for virtual worlds teacher training. Ten educational SL islands were explored critically. Mixed-methods data analysis and triangulation were based on the analysis and synthesis of …
